ILLINOIS FIVE DOWNS LOCALS LASTEVENING Joliet Scores 40-25 \ ictory Over Commodore Quintet Displaying a well balanced quintet and a fine brand of basketball, Catholic high of Joliet. Illinois, proved to be too much for the Itecflim Commodores in the home gym Thursday night, in stepping out to a 40-25 win. Coach George Laurent's crippled lineup played the Illinois lads on practically even terms during the first half but the second stanza was a different story. Weakened defensively by the absence of Simmy Hain, the Commies found themselves to he no match fur the opposing sharpshooters in the second half. Joliet started with a bang and ran the score up to 6-2 in their favor Two Commie free throws made it 4-6. Then Art Baker, who was hurt last week at Delphos, entered the lineup. He almost immed lately scored and made good a free throw to put the locals in the lead. Joliet grabbed back the lead 11-9 at quarter time and held it throughout the remainder of the tilt. At halt time they Increased their lead a little, holding a 15-11 advantage over the locals. In the second half using superior weight and a rushing type of game, the Joliet lads wore down the resistance of the Commies and steauiiy forged away. Pluffalo led the visitors with four field goals and a brace of charity tosses for 10 points, followed by Fracara and Maderick with eight each. Baker with six points led the locals in scoring, while Roop and Bob Hess garnered five each The first half work of Roop, who filled the shoes of the ailing Hain, was highly instrumental in holding down the lead of Joliet. His knack of breaking up Joliet offensive plays and fitting into his own offense was even more help-

•’s'S The curtain is about to ring down on another year, tn sports as well as other endeavors, the past year has had its disappointments as well as its joys. —oOo — Tomorrow night at midnight we start with a clean slate. May the New Year bring a fresh start in the sports world for Adams county and may the entire year be a prosperous one. —oOo — The first sports activity of 1939 in this city will he the annual fourteam invitational tourney, which will be he’d at the new gymnasium Monday afternoon and evening. The Decatur Yellow Jackets will be hosts to the Berne Bears. Bluffton Tigers and Hartford City Airdales as a start for the new year. It is Basketbawl's hope that Decatur fans will prove themselves perfect hosts to visitors Monday. —oOo— The schedule for the tourney will be drawn at 1 p. m. Monday, with the first game one hour later. The; championship game will be played at 8 o'clock, with the afternoon losers meeting in a consolation tilt at 7. The admission price for the tourney will be 50 cents for a season ticket, good for both sessions, or single session tickets for 30 cents. Pretty cheap fun and entertainment, 12’/i cents per game, each of which will have 32 minutes of action. —oOo — Pre-tourney dope favors the Bluffton Tigers for championship honors. But never was there a dope bucket so pretty not - so substantial that it couldn't be upset by a well-placed kick. (May our Yellow Jackets do the booting I. Officials for the tournament will be Jake McClure of Fort Wayne, former coach of the South Side Archers; and Zeke Young, of Auburn, football coach of the Auburn Red Devils and former basketball mentor at the same school. —oOo — Principal W. Guy Brown announced today that the high school office will be open Saturday afternoon and evening for the accomodation of fans wishing to purchase tickets for the Monday tourney. —-000— Decatur’s Commodores, crippled by Injuries and sickness, closed the year 1938 with a loss to Catholic high of Joliet, 111., last night. Joliet presented a big, fast team, which quite likely would have been tough for the Commodores at their best. The Commies put up a real battle for the first half but Joliet’s superior ruggednes wore down the local lads in the second half. —oOo — Basketbawl would suggest to the Commodores that they make a New Year’s resolution to open the 1939 season next Wednesday night with a victory over their arch rivals,
