Yellow Jackets Defeat Berne High, 30 to 21

DECATUR FIVE DEFEATS BEARS FRIDAY NIGHT Yellow Jackets Score JO--21 V’ictory Over Arch Rivals The Decatur Yellow Jackets, improving as the game wore on. scored a 30-21 triumph over their arch rivals from Berne Friday night at the new gymnasium in this city. The Yellow Jackets took the lead shortly before the end of the first Quarter, and with one exception for a brief time in the second period, were never in arrears for the rest of game. Zeke! drew first blood when he scored on Schindler’s foul. Burry evened the count when fouled by Zerkel. C. Stapleton put the Jackets ahead at 2-1 when fouled by Lehman but LeFever and Schindler hit from the field to give the Bears a 5-2 margin. Zerkel connected from near center but Burry tallied a free throw. Shoe hit from the side to tie the score at 6-6 and C. Stapleton scored a point when fouled by J. Baumgartner to give Decatur a 7-6 margin at the first quarter. Midway in the second quarter. Berne took the lead at 10-9 but Shoe's fielder put the Yellow Jackets back in the lead. McConnell scored the final point of the half when fouled by Burry and the Jackets led by 12-10 at the intermission. J. Baumgartner knotted the count at 12-12 when he scored from underneath to open the third quarter. R. Stapleton hit from behind the foul circle but Burry clicked with a one-hander from the side. Gaunt dribbled under to put Decatur in front, 16-14. and the Jackets were out in front to stay. Decatur held a 22-18 lead as the third quarter closed. The Jackets held Berne without a field goal during the entire fourth quarter, the Bears counting their three points on free throws. Decatur gradually pulled away during the closing minutes to win by the comfortable margin of nine points. Scoring on both teams was well divided, C. Stapleton leading the Yellow Jackets with two field goals and five three throws for a total of nine points. Burry was the high scorer for Berne with two

KIRKLAND FIVE EDGE SPARTANS Kangaroos Score 31-27 Triumph Over Pleasant Mills Team The Kirkland Kangaroos staved off a late rally by the Pleasant Mills Spartans Friday night at the Kirkland gym to edge out a 31-27 victory. Kirkland held a 23-15 margin at the half but Pleasant Mills cut the margin in the lust half. P. FO RTWAYNETU BE SCENE FOR STATE TOURNEY State Catholic Tourney To Be Held In February Fort Wayne, for the fifth consecutive year, will be host to the Indiana state Catholic basketball tournament. which will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. February 24, 25 and 26. Decision to retain the tournament at Fort Wayne was made at a meeting of representatives of the various schools, held at Fort Wayne Friday afternoon. Rev. Father Alvin„ athletic director of the Decatur Catholic high school, and George F. Laurent. Commodores coach, attended the meet-; ing. No definite decision was made as to the site of the tourney, as efforts are being made to obtain either the North iSide or South Side gymnasium, because of increased seating capacity. Twelve teams are expected to enter the meet, including St. Mary’s of Anderson, state champions for the past three years. The druw for tne tournament will be made Saturday. February IS. at the Catholic Community Center in Fort Wayne at 2 p. m. Officials and other details for the tourney will be determined at a later meeting. HARTFORD FIVE BEATS GENEVA Gorillas Edge Out 25-22 V’ictory Over Cardinals Friday The Hartford township Gorillas edged out a clßse, 25-22 win over the Geneva Cardinals, last year's county champs, at the Cardinals' gym Friday night after leading most of the way. The Hartford lads were never able to gain more than a scant lead, but were never headed after the first few minutes. They led 7-4 at the first quarter. 8-7 at half-time and 17-15 at the end of thethir d stanza. Augsburger. Gorilla forward, led the winners in scoring with eight points, while Snyder and F.
