CLEVELAND AND RED SOX TRADE Boston Sends Ben Chapman To Indians For Two Players New York, Dee. 15 —(UP) —Frozen ir«4ing activities in the American League were thawed out today with a deal between the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox. After nearly 48 hours of lobbying ..nd verbal bartering between this a.id that club the Red Sox swapped outfielder Ben Chapman, a .340 hitter, to the Indians for pitcher Denny Galehouse and infielder Tommy Irwin, who shortstopped last season for the Milwaukee American association club. This deal was expected to be the forerunner of several other American League trades, originating from Cleveland-Detroit axis. With Chapman to play center field, the Indi >ns are in a position to trade Earl A .'erill. Present rumors send him to me Tigers for pitcher Eldon Auker and infielder Billy Rogell. If this deal can be made, or one similar- then the Tigers can swap outfielder Pete Fox nd infielder Roy Christman to Washington for infielder Cecil Travis. This could go on like a chain letter. Meanwhile, officials of both leagues were congratulating themselves on the most harmonious meeting in years as they went into joint session with commissioner K. M. Landis. The following results have been achieved: 1. —A uniform baseball for bo'h leagues. 2. Agreement on new pitching rules designed to give the pitcher more latitude in his delivery. 3—Night baseball in the AmeriI can league for Cleveland and Philadelphia. ■ - MAKE CHANGES IN BACKBOARDS Backboards In New Gymnasium Will Be ChangTo Glass The changing of the backboards on the basketball goals in the new Decatur junior-senior high school from wood to glass construction, was announced today by Walter J. Krick, city superintendent of schools. The substituting of glass backboards for the wooden ones will be made in time for the Yellow , Jacket-Berne game, to be played ou the local court Friday night. The decision to make the change was prompted by two reasons. Mr. Krick stated. The main reason cited was the fact that glass backboards will permit much clearer vision to the spectators seated in the rear of the goals on the end zones. The fact that a majority of fans., coaches and players seemingly preferred the glass backstops was also cited as a reason for the switch. A white spot will be painted on the face of the backboard to provide a target for the players when shooting. The wooden backstops will be transferred to the gymnasium in the Central school, form- ; erly the old Decatur high school. o COURTHOUSE — Estate Cases A will was offered for probate in the estate of John Neulxauser.
