appointing in gome respects both in Great Britain and in the United States and protests are alomst inevitable. One ot the major obstacles which confronted United States nerotiators in almost a year of diseussion was a nationalistic tendency in England, symptomatic j ot British government anxiety to become as fully self-suilicielit as possible in view of the possibility of war. The United States sought, in the beginning, important concessions on such major farm and orchard products as pork .laid, grains and fruits, including dried and citrus fruits. Politically and economically, the United States needs greater world outlets tor those food-stuffs. Great Britain sought extremely valuable concessions on their woolen and cotton textiles, leather specialties and numeorus metal manufactures. There are substantial indications that the agreements fall far short I of all those mutual expectations, although there may be some more limited concessions along those lines. But the agreement with Great Britain, nevertheless, is broader than any of the previous 19 completed and it may touch upon as many as 1,000 coinmodoities although dealing with most merely to "freeze” them on the free list. Political significance of today's new trade agreement is largely

But it does bring together the two nations which do the biggest world trade—our share last year was 11.8 per cent and Great Britain's 13.6 per cent. Signature will take place as our trade with Germany, third after the United States and Groat Britain in world commercial activity, falls to a new low. Germany and Italy practise the system of exclusive trade favors. The United States and our 20 trade agreement co-signers advocate free trade and equal treatment for all under a world-wide trade agreement structure. o — VOTE RECOUNT (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE; are expected to report to the secretary of state by tomorrow. Bobbitt said * Hsvr rar we win be able to push the recount in these counties depends on how well Republicans in Indiana respond to our drive for funds. CHINESE CLAIM ADVANCES MADE Unconfirmed Reports Assert Closing In On Canton Hong Kong. Nov. U—(UP) —Uul confirmed Chinese reports said today that Chinese Columns were closing in on Canton after shattering the outer Japanese defenses. j Chinese sources said their troops were preparing to storm the batterod commercial center of Southern China, which the Japanese captured almost without resistance. The said that the main Japanese forces had retreated toward Canton from various directions and were awaiting reinforcements to defend the city. Chinese columns, they said, had mopped up the remnants of tbtf Japanese defense at Fatshan, 10 miles south of Canton and had reached Shekwaltong, the Eastern erminus ot the Canton Samshui railway on the south bank of the Pearl river. Meanwhile another Chinese column moved along the Hankow railway line and reached Stuping, seven miles from Canton. Japanese troops repeatedly attempted to recapture Tamshul where the Chinese interrupted communications with Bias Bay. More than 40 Japanese warships end transports were reported to be rushing reinforcements to Canton. Jap Comment Shanghai, Nov. 17—(UP)—A Japanese spokesman admitted today the Chinese had launched a counteroffensive in South China but compared it to Taierchwang where the Chinese were temporary victors. He said the Japanese troops had been drawn back at several points but that they would renew the offensive shortly, apparently when reinforcements arrive. Lake and Vermillion counties "will materially affect the result of last week's election.' All the candidates, including Willis, signed the recount petitions in the office of Robert D. Armstrong, their attorney. Spokesmen at Democratic state headquarters indicated they would concede Tucker's election and I that the state committee will not cofltest It. Unofficial Democratic tabulations on 92 counties gave Tucker a plurality of 989 votes. Republicans, meanwhile, pressed their drive for funds. They had set a goal of $15,000 to finance the recount in six counties. With recount action dropped in Sullivan county, bonds totaling $2,000 were to be posted tomorrow in the circuit courts of the five counties where petitions will be filed. The bonds are required to be posted by the contestors under state election laws to Insure the payment of court costs. G. O. P. leaders did not reveal the amount of money they would need to carry the action into the 16 additional counties. It was estimated, however, that the amount would exceed the top amount set by the state committee of $18,400, to be realized by contributions of S2OO apiece from each of the 92 counties.

DALHOVER TO (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) would think well of me.” James H. Fleming, U. S. district attorney for northern Indiana, de-1 dared that it would be an "out-1 rage to public decency" to give executive celemency to Dalhover, who riddled state trooper Paul Minneman with bullets In an ambush May 25, 1937. Dalhover will march to the white walled death chamber a few minutes before midnight. Since the I execution is for a federal crime 1 and under federal supervision, I three newspapermen, one from each press association, will be allowed as witnesses. None are permitted to watch state electrocutions. Also in the death chamber will be Loren Ayres, Delphi, former partner of Minneman on the police force. Extreme secrecy guarded all plans for the execution, and it was not revealed when Dalhover would be brought here from the federal prison farm at Milan. Mich. It was believed precautions were being taken to prevent possible "springing” of the little gunman by friends, either during the trip or after he entered the death row. U. S. Marshal Al Hosinski will supervise the electrocution and pull the switch which releases the deadly current. The regular death crew will help Hosinski. Dalhover was "triggerman" of the Al Brady gang of free-shooting bank robbers, composed, in addition to the leader, of Clarence Lee l Schaffer, Jr., and Alex Geisking. Only the latter, now serving time in the Ohio state penitentiary, will be alive tomorrow. Brady and Shaffer were mowed down by federal agents on the streets of Bangor, Maine, at the same time Dalhover was captured. Minneman was fatally wounded and Deputy Sheriff Elmer Craig was hit three times by shotgun and rifle slugs at a cross-roads near Royal Center, Ind., while pursuing bandits making a get-away after the robbery of the Goodland State Bank at Goodland. The mobsters, hiding behind a schoolhouse, released the fatal fusillade when the police paused at the crossroads. The Goodland bank was a member of the federal deposit insurance corporation, which made Dalhover guilty of a federal crime. The gang was the last of many notorious middle-western banklooting desparadoes. The leader swore to “make John Dillinger look like a piker,” and the outlaws, carving a bloody path through Ohio and Indiana, became known as the “second Dillingers." Twice they shot their way out of police traps and once broke jail at Greenfield, Ind., after slugg-
