CHAPTER X There was the matter of her passage He d have to make reservation. The money part troubled him. too. Well, he’d have to manage some way. "Maybe I could come later,” she suggested practically. He saw the advantages of such an arrangement, and the disadvantages. too. Go out to a strange place alone, and what happens? Every single woman for miles, and about half the married ones, make a play for you. And what are you going to do? Be nice to them, and you're in Dutch with your own girl, later. Push thsm away, and they spread the word you're kkid of screwy. Explain that there's a gtrl back home and you look like a sap. No, there wa» juat oue way io do it, and that was to start right out as a married man. “That s out. Maggie. You’ve got to come with me " She couldn’t She’d have to. Well, they'd take a couple of days, and think it over. What was there to think over?
It was getting late, and it had been a particularly trying day Margaret ached with weariness. She vwvnted to go upstairs to bed. and just think of going with Kenny, and sleep Tomorrow she could break the news to the family, and they could plan, and if she couldn’t go on the Lurllne she could follow on another boat, say in the summer—- " Darling, Fm so tired. Let’s not talk any more tonight." “I’m tired, too. But I want this settled You don’t seem to realise 1 I’ve got money to raise. I’ve got a ring to buy—" "You sound as if you didn’t want to.” “Don’t be silly. What I mean is. there’s so darn little time —” ’That’s it. 1 really don’t see how 1 can possibly make that boat. But if you go ahead, and then 1 follow —say m June—"

He works hard’” “Then why doesn’t he make something, and take care of tus family Why should you—" “Leave Daddy out ot it This is between you and me.” “Why don’t YOU leave him out of it? It IS between you and me You promised to marry me. and told me you loved me Now you talk family. Make excuses. WeU,

I can’t stand IL You love me, or you don't love me. If you do—" "Kenny, what's wrong with you? You never used to talk like thaL You make me MAD!" She was frightened, afraid of this angry stranger masquerading as Ken, afraid of what he might say about her father, sitting in by the Are. smoking his pipe this very minute She wanted to put her throbbing head on his shoulder, to feel his dear, familiar arms around her She wanted him to comfort her, to tell her that It was all right, and he didn't mean the things he said and everything was as it had always been. But instead, she drew back, head up, hA ls behind her, waiting arrogantly for his answer ’’ “I never used to make you mad." he said. He looked at her tiredly. For a moment it seemed that he. too, was frightened, that he was afraid that something dear and precious was slipping away from him. For just a moment. 'Well, yes or no?” he asked almost flippantly. “If that’s all you care—” “What do you want me to do. break down and cry?” She stood silent, afraid to trust her voice. “You won’t?" “I can’t, Ken." “Well,” he said, “thst’s that" He opened the screen dpor. She let him get as far as the side lawn, and then she tore after him, running, stumbling, almost falling tn the darkness He heard her coming, and be didn’t stop. He walked on slowly, deliberately towards the street "Kenneth!” she screamed. He turned slowly. They were under the magnolia tree now. and it was too dark to see his face. 'Kenny. I can t let you go this way! What's the matter with us? We must be crazy!” “We!” He laughed, shortly “L then. Maybe I am. But I don’t want to say I’U come, and then fail you at the last minute! I’m trying to be fair—" “With whom?” “With everybody Don’t you see that I’ve got to think of more than us?” “I’m not.” “But it's different with me. 1—” ‘Margaret we ve been all through this. I thought you might have changed your mind. If you haven’t—” He paused. 'lf I haven’t, it’s all off? You won’t wait for me?” “That's what I mean." She couldn't believe it. She waited, breathing hard. When he stlU didn’t speak, she tried again "You can't mean that Kenny—kiss me. and tell me you don't mean it.” He said something she didn’t hear. “What? What did you say?" “I said I was through." he shouted, “Through, through, througn!” (To be continued) 1 Copyright. Kia* Feature* syadicate. tar
