SYNOPSIS Os the three pretty Wickham girls, Margaret, the eldest, is the urettieaL* It Is she who supplies the boy friends for the younger girls. Natalie and Barbara, and for nany of her friends. With moat of the eligible young men of the comnunlty to <-h<x>ee from. Margaret licks Kenneth Raleigh, pennilesa vut [Hipular and handsome young tootbal) hero. Her beet friend. Sue Decker, breaks down and confesses that she also loves Ken, and It is partly because of that and her family’s ha!f-c<>ncealed dissatisfaction with her choice that Margaret announces her engngemenL CHAPTER VI Except for the family, they decided to keep ft a secret, after all. Ken didn’t even tell his own mother and father. "Time enough later,” he said. And Margaret, who had all her life associated stoop-shouldered, thin little Mr. Raleigh with what to have for dinner, and Paula's “Please, Miss Margaret, could you just run over to Raleighs and get me a pound of butter, I just missed the last delivery, and I never knew I was that low—” was just as glad that she didn’t have to become a prospective daughter -in - law to him yet And as for Mrs Raleigh, that small, grey ghost of a woman whom she sometimes encountered in the store. It was even harder to think of her as Ken’s mother. I She’d get to like them, later on, of I course, but for the present they | were aliens, and it was just as well that they didn’t know. More than once, however, she > was tempted to "put Sue out of her , misery,” as Nat maliciously ad- j vised, and tell her. • • • As usual, the Deckers were going to spend most of the summer at their place at Lake Tahoe. Twice the Wickhams had been their neighbors there, leasing a cottage just around the point from the larger, more Impressive Decker cottage, and each summer, for years, Margaret and Ken had spent a week or two as Sue’s guest. But this year Ken wanted to work straight through the summer, and Margaret was vague about her plans, and Susan was miserable. "It will be a total loss if you and Kenny don’t come,’’ she told Margaret at least once every day. And there were the questions, the same questions, asked over and | over—Why can t you cornet Why don’t you want to come? You don’t want Kenny to come—that’s it. You think that because of the silly things I said that night . . . Yes, you do! But you must have thought SOMETHING! And if you didn’t, why don’t you let him come now? Well, he always came before. There must be SOME reason! Margaret almost wished the lake would dry up. she was so sick of it, and Sue. Natalie suggested that they try and get the cottage again, and then she’d be on the spot and could easily persuade Ken to drag her out beyond her depth and drown her Aunt Bet wished they wouldn’t joke about such things. Margaret repeated that she didn’t .vant to go away, she wanted to be home, near Ken. But we ve got to go somewhere!” Sabs said.

"Why?” “Well, we always have!" Unexpectedly, Alex Wickham i cast hi* vote with Margaret's. He said that since they couldn’t agree 1 on what they wanted to do they ’ might as well stay home for a change. Why fight mountain mosquitoes, or ocean fogs when you could hsve sunshine and comfort right on your own lawn at home ? So the Deckers, with Sue still protesting, started for the lake, and the Wickhams settled down to a summer at home. After all, there's

always someone at home. Plenty to do. Sort of a thrill not to be going anywhere. The fifteenth of June, and Paula, who had been with them for seven years, left. “I don’t think we'll get anyone Ito replace her,” Aunt Bet said. “Servants are so independent nowadays, and in a little house like ours, and with you girls growing up—” A little house ? Yes, it was a little house, as houses go. But it had large, old-fashioned, high-ceilinged rooms. And everyone has a maid! Most people have two or three. But everyone has ONE! Natalie said, "Aunt Bet, of course, we’re poor. Everybody knows that! We’ve always been. But why carry it to extremes ? It looks so silly, not having a maid!” "Besides, who'd wash dishes and do things?” Babs asked, with what she considered commendable practicality. Margaret searched Aunt Bet’s face, "You may as well tell us the whole story. What's happened? SOMETHING’S happened!” And, when Aunt Bet only shook her head and wouldn’t answer, Margaret

said, ”Thes I shall ask daddy tonight" "Oh, no!” Aunt Bet cried. "Oh no—you mustn’t!" ■ And then she told. She didn’t understand It very well herself, but it had *omething to do with cotton You bought it for so much, atx: presently you sold it for more But something had happened and, instead of selling It for more you couldn’t sell It at all. The men that Alex dealt with were all men of money; men who could afford to wait a year, two years, three
years, if necessary, rather than sei at a loss. And so Alex had to wait too. But finally he couldn’t wait any longer and so he had to borrow from them and others . . . "I’m afraid,” Aunt Bet said, "I’m dreadfully afraid, my dears, that the capital—all the capital. Is gone.” “But the stocks and bonds and things—the things you clip coupons from! We always had lots of those!" Aunt Bet tried again. "No. Don’t you understand ? To raise the money—to make the large profit on the cotton, everything — well, practically everything was sacrificed." The three young Wickhams looked at each other. They looked at Aunt Bet. "It isn’t fair!” Natalie cried hoarsely. "We didn’t want to speculate; we didn’t mind being poor. We never complained. I never had a fur coat in my life and I never once complained. But when daddygees and speculates and loses everything, then it’s too much—it’s just too much, and I don’t care—l don’t care—” (To be continued) Copyright. King Feature* Syndicate, Inc.
