Cooper, but young Kennedy used to be her escort around New York . . . And, just before thebfamily left for England, he bade her a long goodby over the long distance telephone. This young actress is doing ali right in Hollywood. She plays the lead opposite Chester Morris in "Smashing the Rackets”. A man of resource is Boris Karloff. On the "Devil’s Island” set at Warners, Script Girl Alma Dwight sought to strike a match on the bottom of a canvas chair. She managed not only to set the chair on fire but also her slacks. Karloff leaped to the rescue, soundly spanked out the fire. Olivia De Havilland’s Inability to gain weight has the doctors wor-

Does Twentieth Century-Fox know about the little adventure of Arlcen Whelan, Richard Greene and Mrs. William Gargan? While the trio were on a moonlight horseback ride, Mrs. Gargan’s horse bolted. Greene dashed in pursuit and Arleen, taking a wrong turn, became lost in the darkness. The bedraggled trio returned to the stables just as a searching party was being organized. . . . Beavers of this city accompanied the couple. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burt Townsend of this city. Mr. Allwein graduated from the Decatur high school and attended DePauw university, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. For the past year he has been employed at the Central Soya Company. He is the only son of Mrs. F. G. Allwein of Madison street. Six tables of bridge were in play and at each table one card carried the announcement “Tom and Corclene, Sept 2, 1937.” Four games of bridge were enjoyed and prizes were awarded to Mrs. William H. Floods and unexpected Chinese resistance blocked the northern army. Meanwhile, the crisis in Palestine, where rioting between Jews and Arabs has taken approximately 64 lives and wounded at least 160 in the last week, continued serious despite ariival of the British battle cruiser Repulse with 1,200 reinforcements. The 11th Hussars armored car Regiment also was ordered from Egypt to Palestine. Troops and police sought to aid a police garrison at Sheframr, near the terrorized city of Haifa, which was reported under siege by armed extremists, believed to be Arabs. British officials were reported considering the deportation of some Zion revisionist leaders to Seychelles Islands in the Indian ocean. In London, authoritative reports coming through the recent deep silence oer official displomatic developments indicated that Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was having trouble with his policy of realistic appeasement of Europe’s dictatorial bloc. The outstanding immediate obstacle to Chamberlain's attempts to make friends with Italy is the Spanish civil war which has prevented the Italo-Brit-ish agreement from going into effect. Fascist Premier Benito Mussolini has sought to brush aside the question of withdrawal of Italian volunteers from the Spanish rebel army but Chamberlain has now come to the conclusion that British public opinion will not permit such action. As a result he was understood to have taken a firm stand against Mussolini’s efforts to ignore the treaty condition —a stand which his resigned foreign secretary Anthony Eden has been advocating in his attacks on Chamberlain’s policy. Whether the snag in negotiations will be a major or minor problem remains to be seen. Elsewhere: Spain — Rebel troops made important gains in their offensive against Valencia, occupying Nules and moving to within ten miles of Sagunto, key to the Valencia defenses. France — At the international refugee conference, British, American and French delegates were reported ready to accept a permanent refugee set-up, to aid exiles from all nations. Buenos Aires — Paraguay and Bolivia initialed an agreement for arbitration of the Gran Chaco frontier dispute, thus ending the gravest threat ot conflict in the Americas. o TODAY’S COMMON ERROR * Genealogy may be pronounced i either gen’-e-al-o-gy or gee’-ne-al-o-gy. » •
