It was not believed, however, that the killing had any ■connection with the trial but merely was brawl. | l,ee Fleenor, it deputy sheriff on |trlal here, wits arrested in con.inection with the shooting of Charlie* Reno Tuesday night, but that was said to be a Kentucky mountain feud rather than an outgrowth of the trial. Reno had been paroled recently after serving a prison term for the slaying of Fleeinor's father. Mi's. Mattie Miles, who owns the tourist camp where White was shot, said she and Allen Bowlin, another former deputy sheriff on trial, had walked down the road ,to buy groceries. Suddenly, she i said, they heard two shots. Mrs. Miles said she ran back to find White mortally wounded on the porch of her tourist camp. Fifteen feet away, she said, was Patterson. He was arrested by Lieutenant | Clyde Jones of the state highway patrol and was brought to London. Jones said Patterson denied the ■ killing. Patterson, according to jailers in the Laurel county jail, was “unable to talke to anybody" early today. No gun was found in on near ; Patterson's possession, although White had a pistol in his pocket when he was taken to Smith hospital. It was said that no cartridges in White's gun had been exploded. Patterson had not testified here. He did testify, however, before the LuFollette civil liberties committee in Washington last year when that group investigated conditions in Harlan county. He said at that time that he had been “employed
