Children should be careful about riding bicycles on the streets and sidewalks. Travel by bicycle on the up town streets should be prohibited, for serious injury can result from a collision with a rider. Secretary of Interior Ickes surprised most of the country with his marriage to the American heiress. The couple will return here j after a short honeymoon and the new Mrs. Ickes will be the hostess of the famous Ickes home in Washington. Mankind is the same the world over. The campaign against traffic accidents seems to be bearing fruit. So far this year the fatality list . is way below that of a year ago I and through this section of the country, including Decatur and I Fort Wayne, the decrease is very noticeable. Hope it holds that way. Plan's are going ahead for the big Fourth of July fireworks celebration here. The American Legion. which inaugurated the program a few years ago, is planning to patrol and handle the heavy traffic on the night of the pro- ( gram, the police and city street department cooperating. The fireworks display will be held at Hanna Nuttmau field. If the street fair can t be financcd, some plan might be worked out to conduct the livestock and agricultural shows as a distinct community undertaking. The latter permit dne recognition to the great farming iudu'Stry in this county and should be continued in some form. A little help will be needed to make the events successful and your opinion will be appreciated. According to our way of thinking, Mayor Hague of Jersey City would have less trouble if he let Congressman O'Connell or any other fellow make a public speech in his city. Trying to suppress the speech makes the people all the more anxious to hear what the congressman has to say and eventually the public will want to know &tT THIS “ YOU LL MAKI BETTER TIME with SAEETY National Safely Council
what it’s all about. It's better to let them talk. Next Monday is Memorial day and appropriate tribute will be paid to the heroes who defended the flag in the several wars In which Uncle Sam engaged and always came out the winner. The local program is sponsored by j Adams Post No. 43 of the Amer-j lean Legion and the public is invited to participate. A grateful people will never forget the sacrifices of the war dead. There are so many wealthy men iy this country that we believe no other country can match Americans in wealth. Over in Wales, Lord Stuart sold $100,000,000 worth! of real estate, including blocks of ' stores, homes and many farms.i That's a pretty good size real estate deal even in this country. The , property was inherited by the nobleman from his father, who came into possession of it through family inheritance. Work on the improvement of Second and Winchester streets is | i progressing rapidly. A crew of I | men is employed by the State High- | way Commission in construction i work and when the job is done De- : catur will have one of the finest | systems of streets in the state. | The resurfacing of Mercer avenue will follow, adding another mile| and a quarter to the state improve- j ment program. The resurfacing ot ■ the streets is done without any ex ' pense to the city of Decatur. —, The Republican Fundamentalists . ' which seem to have taken over ( ■ the party in Indiana, are attempt-j I ing to write a platform for the state convention. They are against, most of the laws passed in the; past six years and propose to do, it another way. which is about the gist of the argument why they ( want to control the state house. The truth of the matter is. that , l Indiana's laws are working to the | advantage of the people and the j state is’ in* excellet financial conj dition. Graduation day is a big day in I the lives of the'graduates. Like-; wise it is an important day for, the parents. While their hearts are filled with joy and happiness over the success of their daughter ' or son, they also realize that graduation means less time at home for their children and that it won't be long until they begin to build' i i homes for themselves. To all of the graduates we hope the world treats them to the best and that I their mature lives arc filled with ‘ happiness and sucess. Death has brought to a close the lit-., of Samuel Shamp, retired rail-. road agent of this city. For 45 years Mr. Shamp was employed. by the railroads in this city, a number of which he served as j agent at the Nickel Plate. Due to j ill health he was forced to retire, ' but while active and on the job, he was one of the most accommodating men in the service. He had many friends who sympathized with him in his long illness and 1 misfortunes and his death removes a man who always had something good to say for Decatur and its: people. The current issue of Collier's contains an article on the Irish Sweepstakes, claiming that two out of every three tickets sold in the United States are counterfeit. The writer figured out that in view of the fraudulent tickets,’ the pur-i chaser has one chance in three, million to win. By the time the $2.50 purchase price of a tickA reaches the government, it has been reduced to 75 cents. Despite | this shrinkage, a total of more than 57 million dollars has been 1 collected for the Irish hospitals in the last score of years. You hear about the few who win, but according to the chances, for every winner there are three million losers. ___o Harold Strickler is visiting with friends in Dayton. 0., this weekend.
