aisaOlt was under way. A front 30 miles long closed in on the doomed city and early yesterday it capitulated after wild disorders within the defenders ranks The nationalists quickly occupied it, then pressed on to Aviles, 13 miles west, to close up the last means of escape for loyatiats still 1 in the field. With the fall of Aviles the camI paign in Asturias province was considered ended except for the cleanup of inland mountain regions and capture of the loyalist remnants entrenched near Oviedo. The loyalist resistance at Oviedo, scene of a government siege since

the beginning of the war, appeared i crumbling. Radio reports from San Sebastian said that the Oviedo nationalist garrison carried out two sorties, one to the northeast, the other to the southeast, and had . established contact with a column from Gijon. Border reports said the Asturian miners had threatened to shut 1 themselves into mines and destroy i the entrances, rather than stir-] - render. The nationalists were i convinced, however, that the min- . vrs could be dissuaded from a course so drastic. The miners were entrenched on the slopes of Mount Naranco, north of Oviedo. They are well aimed and control the dynamite factory at Tribua and the rifle and cannon factory at Lugones. Both aro in the suburbs of Oviedo, but the nationalist territory within the town was enlarged as a result of 1 the two thrusts engineered by - Gen. Miguel Aranda, the nationalist hero of the Oviedo siege. The surrender of several battalions of Asturian militia who for i months have been besieging the city, brought relief to the inhabitants. During the 15 months of the war the city of 75.000 population was subjected to daily bombardments. It was estimated that close to 15,000 shells fell in it. For months | the Asturian dynamiteros hurled ’ dynamite bombs into the outlying sections but were never able to I penetrate into the center of the J city which was a honeycomb of nationalist entrenchments. From the surrounding moun--1 tains, loyalist snipers picked off anyone appearing on the streets during the daytime. During the 15 months siege the I inhabitants remained in deep cellars which they connected with . tunnels. Thus the population was ! able to move from one end of the city to the other without appeari ing above ground. They also built underground storehouses for food, i water and munitions. More than two-thirds of the city has been destroyed.
