WORLD SERIES MOVES TO POLO GROUNDS TODAY Schumacher And Pearson Slated To Hurl Third Game Today New York. Oct. B.— (U.R) - The New York Giants bruised and battered. limped home today—to the Polo grounds, where they hoped to sfptjt the miracle and halt the inarch, of the fenee-busting New York Yankees toward a grand slam in the 1937 world series. Manager Bill Terry’s National league champions had sad memories of the Yankee stadium, where they were pounded for two 8-1 defeats and their ace southpaws, the veteran Carl Hubbell and the bigeared rookie Cliff Melton, were ground into the dust by Yankee hits. The *Gi ants believed their chances of stopping the slaughter would be improved on home territory. and Terry called on Hal Schumacher, veteran right hander who silenced the Yankees’ bats in the fifth game of the 1936 series, to again try being Horatius at the bridge. Marse Joe McCarthy, manager of the American league champions, who walked into the locker room yesterday mumbling "two down and two to go—but I don't know when we'll get ’em", picked Monte Pearson to put the series in the bag. The Yanks —they play tops at home and abroad —weren't disturbed by the transfer to the Polo grounds for three scheduled games. and were making bets that the smaller field would inspire the fence-busting trio DiMaggio, Gehrig and Dickey to break out In a rash of extra base hits that would crush the Giants beyond repair. . Fair, cold weather was predictF ed for the 45.000 fans 10,000 below capacity expev*hd to watch the Giants' "last stand." The professional bettors favored the Yanks 1 at fi to 1 to win the series and 13 to 10 to take today's game. The 118,248 sane who sat through the first two games studied these facts, which made the Giants bow their “ heads. The Giants have made only two “ runs in 18 innings. * The Yanks have made 16 runs ? in ,16 innings. 1 The Giants two aces, Hubbell 1 and Melton, have been driven to cover. 1 The Yanks two aces. Gomez and Ruffing, have pitched one-run mas-ter-pieces. The Giants have got three men as far as third in two games. The Yanks have sent 20 men to third in two games. The Giants have made two errors. The Yanks have played perfect ’ ball. This could go on and on until ' someone wanted to know how the Giants got in the world series in 1 the first place. That’s what every- ' one was wondering today except the dyed-in-the-wool Giant fans from the era of John J. McGraw. They cling to the last straw, honing against hope that the Giants will rise out of the ashes of defeat just as they did in August to sweep magnificently down the stretch to the National league flag. CHICAGO CITY I SERIES EVENED , White Sox Defeat Cubs, 3 To 1. To Even Chicago Series Chicago. Oct. 8. <U.R> Two lefthanders — Larry French for the Cubs and Thornton Lee for the White Sox will attempt to break the deadlock in the Chicago city series today as play moves into Wrigley field, home of the National league club. Vernon Kennedy’s three-hit pitching in the second games yesterday evened the series with a .3 to 1 victory for the White Sox. The Cubs may lose Billy Herman, star second baseman, who received a shoulder injury crushing into Tony Piet at third base in the sixth inning. The Sox exploded two runs off Charley Root who relieved Curt Davis in the eighth. A single by. Dixie Walker and walks to Zeke Botiura and Larry oßsenthaT fill-! ed the bases, whereupon Luke, Sewell poked a single to right! field scoring Walker and Bonura. i Root was charged with the defeat. I ♦ — -—• I Today’s Sport Parade I (By Henry McLemore) • e New York. Oct. B.—(U.R> —The | society for the prevention of cruelty to second class ball clubs, at an j emergency meeting today, took drastic steps to aid the benighted New York Giants in their alleged world series "battle" with the Yankees. Terming the treatment of the i Giants by the Yanks in the first; two games as one of the most ' flagrant cases of abuse in the his tory of th epastime, the society drew up a plan calling for the handicapping of the American leaguers in the remaining games.; This plan will be presented to Judge Landis with the plea that he put it into effect immediately. It was reported that the plan will be accompanied by a petition signed twice by all the Giants except j relief pitchers Coffman. Gumbert. and Smith These players signed it three times. The suggested handicaps for the Yankees include: 1. A switch in managers, with , Terry running the Yanks and McCarthy the Giants. To date Terry's strategy has been so fantastic that | even the Brooklyn Dodger scouts; have quit taking notes. And when you do something that the daffiness boys won't use you have reached the ultimate with a capital U. 2. Give the Giants a complimentary three-bagger at the start I of each inning. This move might possibly bring the score up to 8 to 9 I ' 3. Allow the Giants relief pitchers to use starting blocks in their sprints from the hull pen. As it i is. they are slow getting off the mark and before they can reach the scene of action the Yanks have . belted another hit off the starting pitcher. Speaking of "starting" pitchers, that's an apt name for! i the Giant aces, isn't it? 4. Require Joe DiMaggio to discard his bat and swing with a (1) I rotary cun opener. (21 live roost-1 er. or (3) a starched collar, sized : 16H. I; 6. Play a double-header today R

and put the Giants out of their ' misery. 7. Eliminate the Yankee halves | of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. 8. Poison the water in the Yan , 1 kee dugout fountain. 9. Let the Yankee wives play for their husbands the first three innings, and give them but two outs. 10. Substitute a spelXig bee for today's game. If Judge Landis adopts these | suggestions the Giants might possibly carry the series to five games. Otherwise it'll all end on Saturday, and the fans who paid $5.50 for seats will have seen the most onesided, boring series in history. To show you how the customers feel, let me tell you a conversation I overheard in section 21 of the mezzanine yesterday. One fan. reading his paper, read aloud an item where a prison warden. to punish his prisoners for misconduct. told them that they would not be allowed to listen to the world series games on the radio. The other fan thought a moment and then replied: "There they go (coddlin' those damn convicts again!" The games have been dull. Today's probably will be duller, with the Yankees winning 9 to 4, after knocking out Schumacher before the finish of the fourth inning Don't ask me how I know this. It's a gift. WILDCATS MEET MICHIGAN TEAM Northwestern • Michigan Clash Feature Os Conference Card — Chicago. Oct. B—(U.R> The Big Ten will discover Saturday wheth,er North western’s conference champions have constructed an- , other miracle team from the rem- ' nants of the courageous Wildcats who rose out of the mud in Dyche , stadium last fall and proved Minnesota could be whipped. Michigan mustered the power and reserves with which to rip telling . holes in Northwestern's line proj riding the Wildcats have not repaired all the allots weakened by 1 I graduation. Indiana travels to Minnesota to face Bernie Bierman's wrathful Gophers, who need a resounding victory to take the edge off the I i defeat at Nebraska. Wisconsin I plays at Chicago, but two intersec- | tlonal games and Notre Dame's first meeting with Illinois since i 1898 likely will overshadow the ' conference schedule. In the intersectional headliner, ! Ohio State will battle Southern California on the west coast. Purdue entertains Carnegie Tech in the other and lowa meets Bradley > Tech in a practice game. Both the Notre Dame-Illinois contest and Ohio State's iftand against U.S C. may figure in the final ratings of candidates for the j mythical national football cham-1 pionship. * Ohio State already nas licked Texas Christian and Purdue Vic tory over the Trojans would place them in a favored position at least for conference honors. At Illinois, wily Bob Zuppke has been preparing for Notre Dame since the day the game was scheduled. The Irish have a good team- possibly a great one. Illinois is fair, heavier than usual, but far greener than the smart little elevens Zup consistently puts on the field. On the basis of squad strength and experience, Notre Dame probably is at least two! touchdowns better, but Zup never lets it end there. Indiana's passing attack, handled by Frank Filchock. may be the Hoosiers' only chance of preventing a rout by Minnesota. Bierman has shifted his team around all week, moving regulars out of the starting lineup tn wholesale lots hoping to revive the Gophers' will to, play the football he knows ' they can play. Wisconsin was a favorite to clean up its business with Chicago, which upset the Badgers : last season. 7 to 6. Purdue should <2o®> SUN. MON.
