Hollywood Reviving Slapstick 1 . |~Mube! NiiriiuiinFj, | Constance B<-nnctt ; i Carole Lombard 1 { ______-- z **— —I > r j ww Hollywood is reviving the art of slapstick. Success of such comedies as "It Happened One Night” and "Theodora Goes Wild" has prompted the film colony to go in for broad comedy. Carole Lombard and Constance Bennett have won new prestige for their clowning. Many of the first-rank stars, who formerly disdained such horseplay as made Mabel Normand and others famous in the days of Mack Sennett, are now seeking comedy roles and prospects for the coining season indicate that Hollywood will be wooing the -u comic muse with real ardor.

JOHN [.LEWIS HALTS STRIKE CIO Head Forbids Immediate Strike In Indiana Mines Terre Haute, Ind, Sept. 17. —<U.R) i —lndiana's’ c'oal miners today looked forward to next Monday afternoon when a committee of members of the United Mine Workers’ international executive board will made an atteih<pt to settle a wage I controversy with the Indiana Coal I Operators Association. All prospect of an Immediate | strike in the southwestern Indiana; coal fields was halted yesterday; by John L. Lewis, international I president of the miners, who urg-1 ed the district 11 (Indiana) union' members not to walkout until the committee he named consults the coal operators. The executive board committee will be headed by John O’Leary of Pittsburgh. Other members named by Lewis were William Sneed of Herrin, 111., and James R. McCormick of Coshocton, O. Harve’y Cratwright, commissioner for the coal operators, said that his group would be "at the disposal" of the executive board committee, but gave no indication whether the producers would meet the union demands of a $6 daily basic ; wage scale. Thus far the top wage offered by the operators has been a $5.57fa daily basic wage, which Frank Barnhart, president of district 11, says is unacceptable. Wage scale conferences have been conducted here since last March 31, resulting qn.ly in a deadlock.
