SEN. WHEELER DEMANDS PROBE Montana Senator Demands Investigation Os Hugo Black Washington. Sept. 17. —(U.PJ The controversy resulting from a newspaper “expose" alleging that Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black I is a life member of the Ku Klux Klan was extended today. Sen. Burton K. Wheeler D , Mont., demanded that President Roosevelt appoint an "impartial board” to in- 1 vestigate. Wheeler, who directed the successful campaign against the president's supreme court enlargement proposal, declared that if Mr Roosevelt failed to act, “the senate should do so." “If the charges made are true, the President should ask for his ißlack's resignation,’’ he said in a statement telegraphed to Washington from Fargo. N. D. Wheeler said he withheld his vote when the senate confirmed Black's nomination, because there had been no denial of a charge made in the senate that Black was a klansman. I The controversy had spread earlier among members of the house of representatives, and to Speaker William H. Bankhead, who declared at his Jasper, Ala., home: "I have never belonged to the Ku Klux Klan. I never was invit-i ed to join. That is that.” Bankhead's’ statement was a reply to Rep. Hamilton Fish. R., N Y., who had said that "U klan affiliations are to be a test of office, it might be well to find out the status of the speaker of the house, who. like Black, hails from Ala - bama.” Throughout the country, senat-, ors. representatives and scores of private citizens issued statements | —some defending, some attacking I the former senator who was chosen by Mr. Roosevelt to succeed Justice Willis Van Devanter. retired. on the nation's highest tribunal. The moisture is kept as high as possible during the process. An effort is being made to find an economical way to eliminate the dust in order that the company may compete with others without too much overhead. Any great increase in the cost of tile would result in the closing of the factory and throwing out of employment the large number of employees. ■ o Dr. S. D. Beavers I Undergoes Operation Dr. S. D.
