Drive safely and don't take chances. The talk of a permit to operate a slot machine is the bosh. It's NS against the law and you can't do it. The Fair Association has banned gambling devices along the midway. That is in keeping with public sentiment and the wishes of a decent community. The decorations are going up and the holiday spirit becomes pre- 1 valent as final plans are being made to open the big street fair. and agricultural show next Monday. rr~ I Dee Fryback, chairman, and the , directors of the Chamber of Com- , merce, join in extending an invita- 1 j tion to you to attend the big fair , and at the same time meet your! ( friends in Decatur during the week ; of August 2. Do you have a vacation fund? ( We noticed in an exchange paper' that in a nearby town the banks paid out $83,000 to those who car- , ried a fund of this kind. We be- , lieve this is a fine way to help j s assure a happy vacation and a few , g cents saved every week will solve j some of the financial problems; ( j connected with a vacation. ( . | i With all the duties he has to ( I perform, it's a wonder that the ( s President does not need more thanl f , nine secretaries. There are thousI ands of communications to be! > handled every day and being head ( * of the United States government , ■ Is the biggest job in the world. t H The country favors giving him all [ ( ■ the able assistants he needs. I I The Daily Democrat appreciates I the support of the advertisers who made possible the publication of 1 1 I the annual Ltreet Fair and Agri- , i I cultural Edition. As part of the j 1 I paper's cooperation, 1,700 extra ' copies or a total of 5,100 papers ; were printed and delivered yester-;. | day, helping to publicize the event. ( B 3 Again, we thank the advertiser. ( 1 Friends of Jesse Rice, popular i I hotel proprietor of this city are / sad because of his serious illness. Jess loved to participate in com- ' i munity events and was an able. i I and earnest worker for the street s | fair aud programs sponsored by , I the Chafriber of Commerce. He f j _ would have loved to be on hand 1 r ! this week and his friends around t II here miss bis help aud smile. t ' 'c The n?W law under which the) e M state gasflflne tax is distributed to c I counties and towns, reduces the ( I amount which the city of Decatur | will receive next year. However, ■ it is not all lost. The state, under I I ci I the same- law, must keep up and, H maintain city streets over which ‘ state highway routes pass. in ♦ J figuring the budget for next year j 1 the gas tax is the largest credit, I i listed. ~ -* — (t< The Decatur tree street fair aud 1 11 Agricultural show is one of the first, I

to be staged ill Indiana this year. . For several years the first full! week in August has been the per-| iod for holding the fair, due to the fact that the fiscal year of the 4-H clubs ends at this time and the achievement awards are made. It will be the bomb for setting off the other fairs in the state and noj’ doubt will rank with the best. Ample police protection will be provided during fair week. Al- ( though avoiding accidents and safety in travel is up to the indi- 1 vidual driver, state police patrolmen will lend every effort in this direction and will see that unsafe drivers are apprehended. Traffic I, men and deputies will cover the j outlying districts with the idea of keeping everything in order and helping where needed. ■ — '—— It's the function of the King and ’ 1 Queen to welcome distinguished' , visitors and dedicate public insti-1 i tutions in their realm, but the re-j < ception George VI and Queen Eliza-, ) beth received in northern Ireland j was of a different brand. The. people probably haven't anything It against the royal rulers as indi- £ viduals, but wished to impress , upon them that the little island j w’anted to go on its own. New York City has passed ani anti-noise ordinance and among other things it permits the use of [ welding in the construction of steel, frames for buildings, doing away with riveting. The ordinance like-j wise prohibits rivetjng and theonce familiar rat-a-tat-tat of the! riveter’s drill from the top of a skyscraper will be something I which the present generation can tell the next generation about. It may also mean great changes in building construction throughout the country and lower costs. Small communities are not much bothered with excess noise from the carpenter's hammer or the riveter, but they do know how it feels :o be awakened by the blast of an into horn or klaxon from an in- • sonslderate driver. —_ — k Adams County Memorial Hospital » -• Dismissed V'-day: Mrs. Lulu Walters, route 5; Fred H-tizeman.
