Those weeds are goin to grow and go to seed unless you cut them now. The Red Men will be here next Saturday for the Tri-State conven- i tion and the visitors are assured of the city's hospitality. Indiana is proud of Governor Townsend and through his leadership other states are looking this way and taking a lesson. Since most of us have started on next winter's coal pile, it's not hard to come to the conclusion that we had a short summer. The American Legion boys cordially invite you to the pyrotechnic display at Hanna-Nuttman park Monday night. The program is given lor your enjoyment. The summer season now reach-, es its height. It will slip by quickly and if yon want a vacation before Labor Day now is the time to plan it or rather take it. The National Red Cross lias issued an appeal to Fourth of July celebrants to mix common sense with fireworks. That includes not holding firecrackers in your hand or in your mouth. The Cleveland pantry girl who identified Robert Irwin as the murderer of the New York model from a picture in a detective magazine has received a reward of SI,OOO. The old saying, "read and profit.” The first fatalities from fireworks have been reported. An explosion of firecrackers in a drug store in Idaho killed five persons and injured a dozen other. There ought to be other ways to cele-| brate Independence Day. SB Don't Skimp ... But Save! Sometimes we confuse skimping with saving. We measure our purchasing by someone else's price rule. Saving means getting full value for every penny while paying less than we would have to pay elsewhere. Skimping means doing without what wo need because the price includes something we are not getting. The ads in this newspaper are open doors to your savings department. Skimping is unvue. Follow our ad pages and discovor tho difference. Aditorlbl fey Qni£ts
— ■ - - '• **• If you're not going to the lakes or planning a motor trip over the Fourth and wish to get out doors, visit the Decatur parks over the holiday. You 11 find them pleasant places to spend happy hours and the restful spots will revive your spirit. Indiana is in good financial condition. it has more than ten million dollars in cash, a sufficient balance to pay the state’s added share of old age pension relief next year without Increasing taxes. Next year the age limit goes to 65 years and several thousand persons will be added to the pension rolls, the state paying about 25 per cent of the increase. Out of the $87,000.000 budget, $24,000,000 is earmarked for the social welfare program. The Erie railroad company has signified its willingness to remove the large concrete bases at the Mercer avenue and Winchester street crossings, a step when taken will mean for more safety. The signal lights erected on the island type bases in the center of the street in the interest of public I safety, more or less defeat their I original purpose, due to the nar- ' rowness of the streets. The comi pany proposes to place the warn- | ing signal lights on the sides of | the crossing. The motoring public ' will appreciate the change. IT'S DIFFERENT HERE:— We Americans sometimes get to thinking that all traffic problems are confined to this country. An editorial in the Erie railroad mag- ' azine gives us another slant on the subject: At Nairobi in Kenya Colony, passengers on an express train ( were suddenly thrown out of their sleepers as the train was brought to a standstill following a violent I shock. The awakened passengers, many of whom sustained injuries, thought they were involved in a wreck. It was nothing of the kind, says h' dispatch to the New York Times. Running at 100 miles an , hour across the jungle, infuriated by the noise and blinded by the glare of the headlights of the eni gine, a short sighted white rhinocerous had madly and fatally charged the locomotive. The train was an hour behind time and traffic was disorganized. The incident parallels another of some time ago, when a passenger train obligingly killed a giraffe, providing a supper for the three lions which had been pursuing it. Still another incident of a few years ago is recalled involving a collision, this time in India, between a freight train and an elephant. The tusker and its mahout were killed in consequence of the collision and the engineer of the | train was charged with committing a negligent act. The animal was a valuable one, the property of the Rajah of Dauripur, who in-' stituteTi the proceedings against j the engineer. * TWENTY YEARS * AGO TODAY 1 From the Dally Democrat File .
