Youth drowns in bathtub —Headline —N o w what argument can | Mom and Pop put up. . ,— The world's prize fight champion-1 ship doesn't amount to anything unless the champion can keep on fighting. - ■ Tragedies started a little early this week, drownings, traffic accidents and explosions taking a toll of eight lives on Thursday. We hope the weekend does not bring more fatalities and suffering. The west is suffering from a heat wave, the temperature climbing to 107 in lowa. While we have not suffered from sizzling heat waves so far, it's the time of year when you can expect a blast which makes it difficult to breathe until a breeze strikes up. A city wide tree trimming campaign should be put on sometime. Most of the beautiful maples need trimming and a tree surgeon should be consulted. If federal funds could be obtained all the shade trees might be trimmed without much expense to property owner and done in away not injurious to the trees. Garrett's new postoffice was dedicated this afternoon with appropriate ceremonies, Governor Townsend and Congressman Farley attending. The building is & handsome and modern structure and the people of that thriving city are proud of it. Practically every town in the Fourth district now has a modern postoffiee building. No good boy or young gentleman will be cruel to animals, birds or insects. Proof that it doesn’t pay was given in Chicago the other I day when a couple boys embedded a grasshopper in putty and then i poured gasoline over it. Carelessly they got gasoline on their own clothes and when they applied the! match to the putty ball, caught ' fire and were severely burned. The , moral is not to torture dumb ani-1 mats or even bugs. The Supreme Court reorganizatirfii bill may come up in the senate next week, according to a statement by Senator Robinson. Much time will be spent in debate on this controversial measure and j it may be sometime before the j country sees a vote on it. The senate is about evenly divided on the ' bill and it will take a formal vote' to determine the outcome. Passage of the bill in the senate would ■ likewise mean approval in the i house. | Even though we live in a coun-| try that beliovos in peace and wants peace, the huge sum of 3683,000,000 has been appropriated ' by congress for the war departi ment. Nearly three-fourths of this 1 amount will be spent for military J purposes, while the" balance of a I couple hundred millions goes for ; expenditures on rivers, harbors and flood control. The navy de- , partment comes in extra. Prepari edness and paying costs of past i wars carries a heavy price. I The country may be worrying about the outcome of labor disturb- ’ ances and the world may have the ' jitters over war scares, but with Mary Pickford, her chief concern I is what dress to wear at her wedding tonight. Since the once popular screen idol has made several marital adventures she might dig up one of her former gowns. But Mary's problem is true to the feminine outlook. In every household the by word is “What dress shall I wear’’ or "I haven’t anything to wear.” If you don't believe it you haven’t had a little girl around the house. C. H. "Christy” Muselman of Berne made an excellent talk before the Decatur Rotary club, rei citing impressions gained from a I visit to Germany, his “Homeland.” after 26 years absence. His devotion and love for America was expressed in sincere tones. As Christy stated, “There is no country like America and to say that I was glad i to get back does not convey my i true feelings." This is the land of freedom and religious liberty, sacred privileges which are not eni joyed in Germany or other foreign countries. Mr. Musselman is a naturalized American citizen, has livi j ed in Berne for 23 years where he 1 ’ has successfully demonstrated the ! advantages of living in this glorious country. o TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY 1 ; From the Daily Democrat File | I June 26. 1917. — French capture front line trenches near Hurtebise.
