BOSTON CHIEF MENACE TO NEW YORK YANKEES Win Four In Row From White Sox; Dizzy Dean Defeated New York, June 18. —(U.R> -Let's take a look at the contenders who are in a mad scramble to get the nomination to challenge the world champion New York Yankees for American league supremacy. The Yanks have had their ups and down and do not look like a team that wil run away with the race by 19(s games as they did in 1936. One of the teams below them now is certain to make a bold pennant bid and might even upset the Yanks. Detroit: Sticking close despite a run of tough luck which robbed the Tigers of several key men. Have shown no signs of quitting. Power to burn and enough pitching if Rowe comes back in good shape. Chicago: Maybe the White Sox shot their bolt when they won those 10 straight and then let the Yanks knock them down when they had a chance to take the lead. Pitching tip-top but hitting spotty and defense shaky. Cleveland: Lacking in spirit, smartness and team play. They can murder mediocre pitching but smart hurling stops the Indians. Infield totters in tight places. Boston: Don’t overlook this club which finally has achieved balance and cleared the decks for a more harmonious spirit by recent deals. The most robust hitting infield around and in improved outfield. Pitching looking up. too. Washington: Just a bare chance to get back in the race. Badly in need of a sparkplug. Os these possible contenders, the team that demands looking into today is Boston. The Red Sox snapped off their fourth straight yesterday by poishing off the

White Sox twice, 5-2 and 3-2. Winning four games from the White Sox, who are on the rebound from their recent spurt, isn't phenomenal in itself. It’s how the Red So xdid it. Four pitchers went the route, and pitched four skillful games. Lefty Grove pitched the first victory 5-1, giving up seven hits. Buck Newsom turned in the second, 3-2, allowing five hits. In yesterday's doubleheader Jack Wilson let the White Sox down with five hits and won. 5 2. and Rube Walberg gave up 10 scattered hits in winning. 3-2, in 10 innings. In four games the Red Sox pitching staff gave up only seven runs. If the Red Sox can keep it up it means trouble for the Yanks. Another thing to bear in mind in connection with the Red Sox is their classy infield of Foxx, McNair, Cronin and Higgins. All of them except Foxx are hitting over .300 and he's batted in 45 runs. The Yanks whatcked Cleveland for the third straight time yesterday. 9-7. Crosetti. Dickey and Selkirk hit homers. The Yanks made 14 hits off four Cleveland hurlers. Three times the Indians were in front and faded. They have the worst case of "Yankee stadium jitters" of any team in the league. They've lost five straight games in New York. All the Yanks have to do is wave a menacing bat at an Indian pitcher and he folds up. The other American league games were rained out. The Phillies turned their wrath on the Cardinals and belted the great Jerome Herman Dean out of the box to triumph, 13-7. Until yesterday the Phils had lost eight in a row to the Cards. Dean was rapped for 11 hits in seven innings, and charged with his fifth defeat. Hershel Martin and Chuck Klein led the 20-hit onsluaght against Dean. Johnson and Winford. They made four hits each. Johnny Mize hit two homers and Medwick one for the Cards. Hugh Mulcahy wt nt the route for the Phils, yielding 13 hits. The other Nationa league games were washed out. Yesterday's hero: Ben Chapman. Red Sox recently acquired outfielder, who singled in the tenth

Mich , June IS — (UP) After five weeks of training. Jersey Jim Braddock indicated to day he still hasn't the faintest idea how he will fight Joe Louis at Chicago next Tuesday night. "I guess I'll Just go out there and see what he's got and then figure how to lick him." Braddock declared. "I'll have it figured by the eithth round at the latest.” The likeaide Irish champion, with his beaming smile and a childish confidence in his right hand punen was more of a ipuzzle than hie enigmatic challenger across the lake. He fought blmuelf into condition as he did the Maxie P.aer. but if he flies at Louis as he does in camp he may be knocked flat in an early round. In every workout. Braddock forced the fighting just ae the Bomber a counter puncher—loves it. Jim e chin usually was wide open when l-.c led. If he miseed with a tight hand, he was dangerously offbalance and a fairly easy target for a blow from either side. The chief point in his favor Is the apparent strength in his aging legs. "You've got to get hit to get close enough to do some punching yourself," Braddock explained. "A champion can't hold bis title bv backing away." The only indication of a possible plan of attack came yesterday when Braddock opened each of five rounds by walring straight to the center of the ring and heaving a mighty right hand at his foe’s head. Max Schmeling dazed the Bomber with a similar punch last June, dropped him to the floor, and finally knocked him out for the first time in his professional career in the 12th round. Most of his followers, however, believed Braddock would select a safer course with a million dollars at stakeLouis Ready Kenosha. W-is.. June 18. — (UP) — Handlers of Challenger Joe Louis were certain today the Bomber finally • has perfected a defense for the right hand punch champion James J. Braddock may count on to retain his championship at Chicago June 22. "Nobody will hit Joe no more since he learned to keep that right glove around his chin,” said old Jack Blackburn, “Not Braddock nor Max Schmeling or any of them will break down that guard." If that defense holds up. Louie will be a fighter w:th virtually no weaknesses when he attempts to become the first negro heavyweight champion since Jack Johnson at Comlskey Park, Chicago. FARMER ADMITS SLAYING WIFE Young Fanner Murders Wife When She Threatens To Leave — Fowler, Ind., June 18 — (UP) —I Theißenton county grand jury at its next sitting will be asked to Indict leßoy Clark, 23, for the murder of his wife, Mayme, 21, in their farm, home at Boswell five miles south of here, authorities said today. Sheriff Amoti Senesach and state police who aided in the investigation said that Clark confessed the! murder to them late yesterday, the first killing in this quiet agricul- ( tural county In years. Clark, according to the state po-, Jlce and the sheriff, quarreled with | his wife when she told him she was going to leave him, taking her two ’ (hildren, one two years old and the other three months old, with her. | This infuriated Clark, authorities I said. He allegedly seized his shot-i gun and fired one blast, which struck Mrs Clark in the chest, killing her instantly. Clark went into town and told an undertaker that his wife com-' mitted suicide, but before going to the body the undertaker called the sheriff. Senesach became suspicious j when he observed the position of the gun beside the body and took Clark into custody. Clark's fingerprints were found on the gun. state police learned. He was taken to the mortuary where his wife's body lay and asked by the sheriff to place the gun across her body just as he found it, police reported. “No, 1 can’t do that,” Clark cried and then confessed the crime, sheriff Senesach said. An indictment charging first degree murder will be sought. This is the second murder in the Clark home. In 1962 a previous own-I er, William Lydia, was killed. His | wife and a farm hand were found ; not guilty of the s’aying. o Tram Late, Official Fined Budapest (U.P.) — Because a tram was 30 minutes late, M. Al- I i xandre Patz, a director of the Bud- (
