Chicago. | Charter Member of The Indiana League of Home Dailies. Wear a poppy Saturday. The funds thus raised will be used to aid the disabled war veterans of America. It's a good time to start keeping the weeds down. If they get the best of you they are hard to lick. Now it's easy to keep up with them. Wally is to have her hair dyed blue to match her wedding gown, showing how silly a gay young thing like her can get when her big day draws near. Since the workmen's compensation law was enacted twenty-one years ago. injured workmen in Indiana have received a total of $46,009,699. not including medical fees, facts which we are sure it will be agreed have been to the advantage of the laboring man. , Officials scoured this “neck o'' the woods'' all day yesterday and last night hoping to head off the Brady gang who were supposed to have been seen at Ossian. The search w„s unsuccessful but if the desperadoes had been spotted they would have had a warm reception. Boys who carry on hallow'een pranks during this time of the year are guilty of tresspass and when they cause damage to property are making themselves liable to severe punishment. It's better when they let off steam at baseball, tennis or some other pasttime. A new fish and game law becomes effective in Ohio next Sunday when all anglers over IS years of age must have a fifty-eent permit. It is expected to bring into the treasury this week a quarter million dollars which officials saycan be used to advantage in the conservation department. Mickey Cochran, fighting man-, ager of the Detroit Tigers, who was out most of last season, because of severe injuries, received a fractured skull when he was hit by a pitched ball in a game at NewYork. He is one of the most popular players in America and millions of fans are pulling for the great Irish catcher. s The Benjamin Harrison home in Indianapolis is to be preserved as a memorial by the Arthur Jordan Foundation, making it available toi the public. Mr. Harrison was the only president ever elected from this state and it is fitting and proper that his memory be retained and the house from which he moved to the White House kept < intact. Get the Brady gang is the slogan 1 of the police of Indiana from the, constables up and it is to be hoped that they keep up their vigilance until the bandits are taken and safely put away. These men are not ordinary criminals but killers as was demonstrated Tuesday when they deliberately shot down two officers after robbing a bank at Goodland.
While the permanent routes for I the state highways through this, I city or as near to it as possible' I are being worked out, the more' I careful every one is. the more' ; Judgment used in parking, the more attention given to stop signs and lights, the less double parking, the better it will be and the easier to gain consent and agree- ; ment of the representatives of the | state highway commission. A recent report by the department of justice discloses that twothirds of the arrests for crime, dur-1 lug the period covered through I the past ten years, were of persons between the ages of 15 and 24. 'lts the teen age when boys and ; girls usually get their bad starts. 1 I If they can get over that period 1 they usually see the injurious rei suits of a life of crime and go the straight and narrow path. The death of the venerable bus-1 iness leader, John D. Rockefeller. Sr., has brought up the old question of whether a man can make a billion dollars honestly. Os course that depends on your definition for honesty. If a man controls a necessary product, he can get rich rapidly. Ideals are fine but after all we seem to need I' wicked, practical men, to dish it ' out and furnish the dough. Things do change. Charles P. Taft, son of the late conservative; President and Supreme Court justice. speaking at Indianapolis this week said, "We musn't let Washington run out on us.” meaning , that he opposed any reduction in ■ the apprporiations to take care of unemployment, even though the problem is rapidly becming one of securing labor rather than pension ' ing the idle. His father would i never have taken his attitude. I Twenty years ago we were at war. In Flander s field the poppies I grew and sparked the falling place ' of thousands of American soldiers. Since then once a year Poppy Day has been observed as an occasion when loyal citizens wear one of the red flowers and the money for the sale of these is used for the splendid cause of aiding disabled veterans. Mayor Holthouse has designated next Saturday, May 29th as the 1937 Poppy Day and in his proclamation asks all citizens to wear the American Legion and Auxiliary memorial poppy. It looks as though two or three i criminals who boast of their badness and boldly threaten a worse series of hold-ups and killings than was put on by the late John Dillinger, ought to be brought to time, but of course it's more difficult than appears on the surface. These men are always on the lookout and hesitate at nothing to accomplish their purposes. They believe no doubt that the more terror they cause the easier their game will be. Os course eventually they will be taken and punished or kill-' ed in action, but in the meantime the police in every city and hamlet I must keep their eyes open for this gang and when they go after them. 1 realize they are going against killers. o * CONGRESS TODAY * By UNITED PRESS Senate: In recess. Committees: Wheeler continues rail finance investigation. 10:30 a. taHouse: Considers re'ief bill. Committees: Military affairs considers helium bill.
