CENTRAL SUL \R -(CONTINUED FKO-' "AGIC uNE) will mean a total o’ 17 394 ton, a record price tor sugar Peeta grown tn the Central Sugar "urnpany's area. Propoa. <i legislation now p .1ing in congress provides for a permanent excise tax of 75 cents per 100 pounds of raw sugar sold in the United States. From the funds raised. 70 cents per 100 pounds of raw sugar will be paid in benefit payments. This will mean a government payment of approximately *2 a ton should the act be approved. Central Sugar grower officials stated this, with increased payments to be made by the plant, will make sugar beets one of the most profitable crops in America. Increased 1937 Acreage More than 15,000 acres of sugar beets have been contracted for 1937, the greatest acreage et r signed in the Central Sugar company's area. Os this amount, approximately one-third has been planted. J. Ward Calland, field manager of the company, said that rains! this week assure the sprouting of every seed. The balance of the crop will be planted during the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June. There is little danger of a crop failure for beets planted before June 20, Mr. Calland said, as they will be matured by October 20. The acreage c 15.000, contracted for this yeat, compares to 13.500 contracted for in 1933. 1934 and 1935, and 11.000 in 1936. As has been the policy of the company, additional improvements are being made to the plant this j year by a permanent crew of| about 30 men who are instating new equipment and repairing and cleaning <he old machinery. I > plant over tn 1933, improveu. nts have bjen made annually, greatly Increasing the capacity I and efi. uicy of the plant. These I savings have been passed on to, the growers and are the cause of the increased price for beets in 1937. The contracts this year are the most favorable ever offered the growers. v-day Campaign Prospects now are for a run of 90 to 100 days during the processing season at the plant this full, the longest since the plant was taken over by the Central Sugar company. This will mean inI creased payroll and funds to be distributed next fall. The longer campaign will also result in increased payments to truckers, hand laborers in the field and transportation companys engaged in hauling the company's products in a radius of 30 mills of Decatur. Company officials pointed out that most of the money was brought into the county by the sale of sugar and its by-products over the United States. o STUDENTS WILL (CONTINUED FTCOM PAGE ONE) Royle, His sahdow — Kenneth Chilcote Reverend Doolittle, man of mystery—Bill Lynch.
