They planned to open another derby in Cincinnati today. The bus travelled 70 miles, crose- > rd the Mississippi, and wae approaching Salem. The hue was approaching a small cnlvert when one of the front tires blew out. Thomas wrestled with the steering wheel but could not control it. The bus nosed into the ditch, rolled on its side, and smashed into the culvert. It rolled over again, came to rest upside down across the highway. The motor wrenched loose and rolled along the road. A sheet of flames enveloped the wreckage almost immediately. The bus "seemed to explode,’ 1 one of the survivors said later. Thomae apparently hurtled through the windshield when the bus crashed into the abutment I Three of the other survivors emashed windows and crawled out as flames licked at their heete.
