PURDUE MEETS GOPHER FIVE Boilermakers Must Win To Tie Illinois For Big Ten Lead Chicago, Feb. B.—KU.R> -Purdue jumps back into the big ten basketbull race tonight with its first comeback bid for the lead against the number one spoiler of the conference— Minnesota. In the most significant of four league games, the improved Gophers will attempt to halt the Boilermakers Just as they did Ohio State in its battle for a first place tie with Illinois Saturday night. Northwestern meets lowa at ToWa City. Chicago plays at Indiana and Ohio State meets Wisconsin at Madison in the other three gained Illinois does not play. With a difficult schedule still ahead. Purdue must whip Minnesota to continue its basketball reign for the fourth straight year. A victory would place the Boilermakers in a tie for first place and set the stage for the battle of the year Feb. 15. when the Boilermakers clash at Illinois. Despite their high position in the conference standings, the Gophers were conceded small chance of halting Purdue. The tightest defense in the league—less than 21 points a game have been scored by opponents — may cause Purdue trouble but a weak Gopher attack likely will not keep pace with the Boilermakers. FRANKFORT IS LOOP WINNER State Champions Again Loom As Favorite I or Title Honors Indianapolis. Feb. B.—KU-W f" 1 lowing in the footsteps of its Ulus I trious predecessor, the 1936-37 edition of the Frankfort high school basketball team today had achieved its first goal as Hoosier prep quintets continued competition throughout the state for sectional land conference honors. First conquest for the current Frankfort five of coach Everett j case was the championship of the north central conference. I served notice of its superiority by winning the same big ten confer- ! ence title. Today the Casemen again hold top position among the state leadI ers which include such teams as Martinsville. Central of Fort Wayne, Anderson, Vincennes and Horace Mann of Gary. Tne Hot Dogs continued competition by entertaining Muncie in an NCC game Friday. Competition for honors in the northeastern Indiana hardwood circuit reaches its climax next Saturday night when the league-leading Central of Fort Wayne team entertains its city rival. South Side. Both are undefeated in conference play. Central has won seven loop contests while South Side has five victories, having beaten lastplace North Side of Fort Wayne in a conference tilt last Saturday. With Horace Mann of Gary having virtually clinched major honors in the western division of the northern Indiana conference, interest in that circuit centers this week in the impending eastern diI vision game between Elkhart and Goshen. Unbeaten Elkhart added its 6th i victory last week by trduncing Central of South Bend. Goshen has won five and lost one. A victory for the latter Friday at Elkhart would throw the division race into a tie. Martinsville continued its domination of the south central conference over the week-end by defeating Greencastle, 31 to 26, in a league engagement. The victorious Artesians play at Connersville Saturday night in another loop tilt. An upset was registered over the week-end. however, in the southern league, when the previously unbeaten Vincennes quintet fell before Washington, 17 to 14. The defeat did not move the Alices from the league lead although Bloomington fortified its second place berth with a victory against Reitz of Evansville, 37 to 20. o CROP MEASURE FROM PAjg ONB) taken over by the government in years of large production, stored, and put back into commercial channels in years when production falls below consumption.
