DECATUR TEAM BEATS EAGLES FRIDAY. 40-32 Jackets Rally After Slow Start To Score Decisive Victory (By Pete Reynolds) Rallying after a slow start, the Decatur Yellow Jackets chalked' up their third northeastern Indiana conference victory Friday I night, defeating the Columbia City i Eagles on the Decatur floor. 40 to J 32. Unable to solve the Columbia; City offense in the opening ininut-j es of play, the Yellow Jackets were ■ on the short end of a 13-6 score as the first quarter ended. Two baskets by Hurst and one I by Brodbeck put the Jackets back I in the ball game as the second I quarter opened, and at the end of I the half. Columbia City's lead had been cut to three points at 18-15. Brodbeck and Hurst scored in rapid fire fashion with the opening of the third quarter to give Decatur the lead at 19-18, the first time the Jackets were out in front after the opening minute of play. Worthman and Brodbeck both hit! from underneath the basket to 1 lengthen Decatur's lead. Play was close throughout the I rest of the third quarter, with De- j catur out In front, 26-23 as the fin-I al period opened. The Jackets really opened up as I the fourth quartet; started, and | with Hurst scoring nine consecut- 1 ive points on three field goals and as many free throws. Decatur was I far out in front. Berne held a 9-6 lead at the . quarter but Dunkirk came back to ' hold a 21-15 margin at the Trait. Dunkirk was still in the lead at the end of the third quarter.
