With the month less than half gone the re- . newals have exceeded any year in . a decade and we are hopeful that by the end of the month the big ■ annual job will be well disposed of. Mild weather continues and while it is fine for those whose ; duties Include keeping the home j fires burning, the health statistics do not show it so favorable. Thous- 1 ands of people are ill over the state i and cool, crisp weather might improve that condition. ———— I Ohio legislators will attempt j again to pass a bill providing for j the death penalty for kidnapers ; who demand ransom. Most states j have such a law and the recent j Mattson tragedy will probably • bring such a statute to every state. , Surely there can be no worse , crime. I ■ I Just what steps will be taken by < Governor Townsend in regards to the labor difficulties in Indiana, have not been announced, but those who know how wise and careful j and sound he Is, are willing to let . him work it out, feeling sure that ( his decisions will be fair and best £ for all. ( t It is to be hoped that J. Edgar ] Hoover, chief of the federal bu- ( reau of criminal investigation, who ( has gone to the state of Washing- ( ton to personally superintend the hunt for the kidnaper and murder- f er of the Mattson lad, meets up ( with him and that he or his men can dispose of him as they have a number of the number one crim- ( inals the past two or three years. ( I Os course a strike cf automobile , workers effects Michigan more j than any other state for there are ( employed thousands in the various plants. Governor Frank Murphy is doing his best to settle the ser- , ious affair with the least loss to every one in every way. if he accomplishes his purpose he will have , further endeared himself to the good people of that great common wealth. I Senator Sherman Minton of Indiana, only two years old as a senator has the distinction of being chosen as assistant whip of the greatest law making body in the world, an honor that is deserved and will be carried with distinction by this able and aggressive Hoosier. Senator J. Ham Lewis of Chicago is the whip and will lean I CHANGE OF ADDRESS Subscribers are requested to give old and new address when ordering paper changed from one address to another. When changing address to another town, always give present address and new address.
i heavily on the younger and dependable Minton. Spurred by public indignation and the official support of President Roosevelt the ”G” men will keep up the hunt for the murderer of the little Mattson boy until he is found an d duly punished. Whether he be a maniac or a low criminal, he should be placed where he will never again perpetrate such u heinous crime. There can be no pity for such an inhuman character. The less legislation by the 80th! Indiana General Assembly, the better will Governor Townsend be' pleased. Aside from recommend-; Inga labor board to have the pow-; er to adjudicate strikes and dis- 1 agreements, the new governor suggested that we proceed to correct existing laws and not establish any record for number of acts enacted. That position will please the | greater number of Indiana citizens. Regardless of what the law may be in other states there is probably no doubt that Indiana generally does not wish a law legalizing the sale of liquors on Sunday. There is a demand from some of the Calumet counties for such a law because drinks are sold in Illinois and Michigan on the Sabbath but those who are sponsoring such a bill in the legislature will find much objection to the proposal from other parts of the state. The annual Birthday Ball for the President will be held at the Decatur Catholic school auditorium Saturday evening, January 30th. Tickets will sell for one dollar with Severin Schurger and Miss Charlotte Elzey in charge. I Those who attend will have a good time and will aid a wonderful cause —assisting victims of infan-1 tile paralysis and 70% of the profits will be retained for use in Adams county. Buy a ticket and boost it along. Money, like all other commodities, has iis price and is ruled by supply and demand. Just now every bank statement shows large amounts of cash on hand and interest rates are low. That will continue for a while because it is the I policy of the administration which I feels that this will force money to be invested, aiding business and employing labor. Those who desire to receive more than a three per cent return on their money must build or btherwise invest it. An unusual airplane crash was! that of the big liner which crash ' ed into a foothill in western Califoruia Tuesday evening, when two were killed and ten injured. Usually the crash of a plane means a total loss of all passengers. It is sad news to millions that Martin Johnson, famed big game photographer. was one of those killed and his wife seriously injured. Just a few minutes before leaving Salt Lake City on the fatal trip, Mr. Johnson had stated in an interview that "Jungles are safe in comparison with civilization,” and so it seems. o ♦ — ■• Answers To Test , Questions i Below are the answers to the Test Questions printed on Page Two * _. _ * 1.
