ILLINOIS WILL SEEK ATHLETES Athletic Director Outlines Plan To Attract Athletes f 1 Chicago. Jun. s. (U.R) Conner--1 votive athletic leaders at the University of Illinois stepped forward today with a plan to recruit ath- ■ letes within the Big Ten law. While other major colleges toyed with explosive ideas on sulisi- • dization, athletic director Wendell i S. Wilson outlined a “legal" nine ■ point program asking non concessi ion from the western conference. ■ It lay most of tne burden upon alumni, who will sponsor an ex- • haustive campaign to advertise the ’ university to prospective freshmen, i More scholarships based on com- ' petition and merit will be sought. ESTafdishment of a central employment agency on the campus was urged. "We. are convinced it is possible to attract desirable athletic material without violating any rules.” said the youthful successor to the late George ("G") Huff, veteran director of athletics. “This movement does not in any sense abandon th? high principle by whicTi Illinois athletics always have been guided,” he said. “It definitely is not a front for undercover subsidization.” I While Huff was in command. Illinois consistently refused to cut any corners where athletes were concerned. There even were reports Illinois cracked down on them in the classroom harder than on other students with outside activity. Through the boom years, big men went to Illinois and Boh Zuppke turned out championship football teams. In the depression, they turned away when little aid was offered. o WsmwL bI I (By Fetey The Decatur Commodores feature a heavy card of basketball for Adams county teams tonight. — oOo — The Commies will battle their ancient rivals, the Irish from Central Catholic of Fort Wayne, on the local floor tonight. The Irish dropped their last two tilts, to i Cathedral of Indianapolis and Central of Fort Wayne, but with a veteran team, will give the Commodores plenty of competition. —oOo — The Commodores have been put through strenuous practice sessions all week after their miserable showing at Monroeville New Year's night, when they were defeated by a weak Monfoeville team. —oOo — The Yellow Jackets will engage in their second conference game of the season tonight, when they meet Zeke Young s Red Devils at Auburn. The Red Devils have won one conference game and have Ipst tnree. Decatur scored a victory in its lone conference game with the North Side Redskins. —oOo — The conference standing is as follows: W. L. i South Side 3 0 Central 3 0 Decatur 1 0 Columbia City 2 1 Hartford City 11 ■ Bluffton 1 3 Auburn 1 3 North Side .’ 0 1 Kendallville ... 0 3 - 000— Take a map of Adams county, stick a pin therein at random, and you'll be close to a basketball game. Seven games are on the card tonight, ranging from the north at Monmouth, to the south at Geneva. Take your choice. For the rest of today's column, read what other writers have to say: Decatur's Turn “It seems that Tuesday night was Decaturs night to win. It would be too. right when we were all set to rib Pete Reynolds a little about takifig two Th a row. It is now alnlost certain that the Yellow Jackets and Tigers are not gonna give we column conductors much to crow about as far as in-ter-school clashes are concerned. Oh. ivell, we’ll try to carry on to the bitter end. We hope that through the Tigers letting the Yellow Jackets beat them in basket- . ball means that the Tigers will win a football game from them this fall. The Tigers haven't done that ; for about three seasons, if our I dope is correct." — Bunk. Bluffton

News-Banner. —oOo— Trouble In Camp “It looks as though the Bears may have an altered lineup this week-end. Coach Erne is threatening to cut one or two first team boys off the squad for a while, and also demote a couple of others to the second team, because of indifference and failure to live up to training regulations.”— Ed. Berne Witness. —o()o- - A Shake-Up? “Coach Erne may make a drastice shake-up in his lineup for this week. Some of the boys are not obeying training rules and some are shtg.ving a marked indifference. Several of the boys seem out for a good time and show poor attitude on the playing floor. Coach Erne may bench several of the first time players and take a chance with second team boys, unless the first stringers snap out of it in a hurry and show a little more spirit and determination." —Simon,’ Berne Review.
