I 000 | The Yellow Jackets lost two fiames in the blind tourney played at Bluffton New Year’s 1 day, while the Commodores dropped a game to the Mon- { roeville Cubs at Monroeville. 000 The ’ “-‘ford City Airdal ’ were ep.Mlv the class of the New Year's day tourney at Bluffton, the Air- . dales running over Bluffton and I Berne with little difficulty. The . Yellow Jackets proved somewhat ' of a disappointment to their followers. The Jackets gave Berne ! a close battle in the opening ' game, and ho.d they been hitting I better from the field, might have I upset the Bears. Decatur’s showi ing against Bluffton was not so good, the locals appearing tired from the afternoon contest. 000 I Somebody picked an all-star team after the tourney closed. The first team: Dro. Berne and McConnell, Decatur. forwards; Templin, Bluffton, center; Ervin and Wunderlin, Hartford City, guards. Second team: Carrl, Hartford City and Beatty, Bluffton, forwards; Rfesinger, Hartford City, center; Smith, Bluffton and ■ C. Lehman, Berne, guards. 000 Some of the Commodores apparently were affected adversely by the New Year's celebration and as a result, the Commies were severely trounced by the Monroeville Cubs. 000 Rivalry battles will feature the Decatu-r teams' schedules this week. 000 The Yellow Jackets will launch activity, meeting the Bluffton Tigers on the local floor Tuesdaynight. After that defeat from the Tigers in last week’a tourney, the Yellow Jackets are thirsting for revenge. 000 The Commodores will tangle with their arch rivals, Central Catholic of Fort Wayne, on the local hardwood Friday night. On records to date, Central Catholic rules as the favorite, but after the Commies’ miserable showing agajnst Monroeville, the locals may eome to life this week. 000 A total of 11 games are scheduled for the teams of Adams county this week, so take your choice and see plenty of basketball. 000 One year ago this week: Yellow Jackets 47, Auburn 34 Yellow Jackets 25. South Side 22 Commodores 30, Central Catholic 22 Berne 64, Portland 26 Monmouth 28, LaOtto 11 Geneva 20, Jefferson 12. o — Mrs. Leland Franke and daughter Mary were among the Decatur visit- ’ ore in Fort Wayne Saturday.

Even Indiana, strong as ever with a high-scoring unit, felt the pressure of the tightened conference race in an encounter with undefeated lowa. Purdue opens defense of its share of the championship against Wisconsin at Lajayette, Ind., with little fear of an upset, but Illinois and Northwestern risk their dark horse chances in a tc-aditional game» at Champaign. Minnesota stepped outside the conference to meet De Paul. Led by their co-captains — Ken Gunning and .Vern Huffman — the Hoosiers built wp an excellent nonconference record of one-sided victories. The co-champions were strong favorites to defeat lowa, although the Hawks have found new scoring punch in the back court and rank as a major threat to first division teams. Indiana’s chances of repeating
