HUNK ANDERSON IS GIVEN GATE Former Notre Dame Coach Fired At North Carolina Raleigh, N. C-, Dec. 22.-<U,P>-H. W. (Hunk) Anderson, dismissed last night as head football coach at North Carolina state college. considered two possible offers ‘ of jobs today as a controversy flared over the action of president Frank P. Graham of the University of North Carolina in leaving the. former Notre Dame mentor out of. the new state athletic setup. Kidnaped General’s Wife Seeks Release Shanghai, Dec. 22.—(U.R>—An of ' flclal announcement at Nanking today said that Mme. Chiang Kai Shek. wife of the generalissimo, arrived at Sian-Fn. In Shensi province, by airplane this afternoon to plead for his Immediate release by young Marshal Chang Hsuen-Liang. Mme. Chiang, educated in the United States and alluring, left Nanking by special airplane this morning. She was accompanied by her brother, T. V. Soong, Harvard graduate, and W. H. Donald, Australian, a former adviser to the "young general” now in revolt. She hoped to arrange the immediate freedom of the generalissimo. who has been held by Marshall Chang since a week ago last Saturday in an uprising that at first was based on a demand for war on Japan. o ' Hartford Township Lad Is Taken To Clinic Clarence Edward. 16-months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Flora Zimmerman. of Hartford township, was to be taken to a medical clinic in Fort Wayne today in an effort to dislodge a metal button from the child's throat. The button from the snowsuit of the infant was swallowed last Tuesday. He was brought to the Adams county memorial hospital. X-rays show that the button failed to enter the stomach, lodging in the esophagus. The baby has been able to take a little nourishment. The button is about three-fourths of an inch in width. —o Million Dollars To Farmers Of Indiana Lafayette, Ind., Dec. 22. —(U.R) — Approximately $1,000,000 in payments to Hoosier farmers for complying with various provisions of the 1936 soil conservation program have been approved. L. M. Vogler, chairtnan of the Indiana agricultural conservation committee. announced today. Payment of $911,790.66 will be made to 8.936 applicants approved by the state and federal committees. More than 20.000 applications from 56 counties have been received in the state office, Vogler said. The payments being made at this time represents 90 per cent of the amount earned by cooperating farmers under the program, he added. The remaining 10 per cent, after expenses are subtracted, will be paid at the conclusion of the 1936 auditing. o Emil Franz Rites Wednesday Morning — Funeral services for Emil Franz, of Middlebury. Ohio, who died at his home Sunday evening, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock at the Middlebury M. E. church following a brief ceremony j at the home. Burial will be made at Middlebury. o None Injured As Tw o Cars Collide No one was injured when cars driven by R. E Leming, of this city - and Arthur Bie'er, of near Berne, collided last evening at 5:30 o’clock. The accident occurred at the al- ; ley intersection on West Monroe street, between First and Second. Both cars were only slightly damaged. o Pope’s Condition Seems Satisfactory Catican City. Dec. 22 — (UP) — Pope Pius spent a comfortable night and his condition as a whole appeared satisfactory, a spokesman for the papa! household said today. The pope was looking forward to broadcasting a message to Roman Catholics of the world Christmas Eve at 12:30 P. M. (5:30 A. M. C. S. T.) on a wireless wave length of 19.34 meters. Prof. Aminta Milan!, his private physician, having jeluctantiy permitted the Pope to deliver the message, was trying today to persuade him to speak only briefly in order not. to tire himself unduly. o Heavy Damage Done By Salvador Quakes San Salvador, Dec. 22 — (U.R) — Earthquakes which shook eight cities, in this Central American republic over the week-end did $100,000,000 damage in addition to causing approximately 100 deaths, it was estimated today. President Maximilian Hernandez Martinez prepared a reconstruction program. He will ask congress for an emergency credit to facilitate rebuilding the ruined city of San Vicente. Approximately 500 were injured.
