CENTRAL GRADE TEAM DEFEATED TUESDAY NIGHT St. Joe Rallies In Second Half To Cop First Os Series (By Bob Shraluka) Undismayed by a margin of victory built up shortly before halftime. the St. Joe eighth grade quintet rallied to down the favored Central five on the Commodore floor last night, 28-22. in the first of the city-series battles. Ardent eighth grade supporters I were given plenty to rave about during the entire game, with both teams flashing a brand of basketball that would do credit to high school outfits. Seeking to recapture the George ! Wemhoff trophy, awarded annually to the winner in the inter-city series, St. Joe took the floor in the second half to overcome a 16-12 lead and nose out the win. The game opened in characteristic style with the score tied four ' times in the first 11 minutes and neither team able to gain more than a two-point margin at any one ' time. Then the superior weight and height of the Central aggregation began to tell and St. Joe faltered, to fall behind. At the start of the second half, led by Hackman, tall center. St. I Joe took the lead after overcoming I the four point margin and stayed

Hackman was the individual star of the game, getting six baskets for a total of 12 points and repeatedly following in to take the ball off the backboard for St. Joe. Fuhrman was high scorer with four baskets and two fouls for 10 points and Chilcote scored three times from the field for six points. Each man to enter the game gave a creditable account of himself, much to the enjoyment of a goodI sizeu crowd, who turned out to see 1 the opening of the annual battle for the city crown. Both coaches. Bob Andrews, of St. Joe and Steve Everhart, of Central. may be pleased with the show--1 ing of their fives, which promise 1 to send valuable material to their respective high schools for future use. The next game in the series will be announced at a later date. Since last night's battle, the stock of the 'scrappy St. Joe outfit has gone up considerably, with their chances of regaining the trophy regarded more j i highly than for the past several years. In the preliminary St. Joe lost to the Central r-serves. 18-15. Kitchen, of Central, was high scorer with six points. St. Joseph FG FT TP! Friday night the Yellow Jackets will entertain the Berne Bears on the local floor. 000 The only game which approaches the Berne game in fan interest in this city is a clash between the Yellow Jackets and the Bluffton Tigers. 000 The Yellow Jackets ha,ve had very little success against these Beane for the past three seasons and are really thirsting for revenge. The locals surprised even I their most ardent backers last i Friday with a. sterling victory i over North Side. Hurst, veteran I center, was out last week and it I is uncertain if he will be able to participate against the Bears. 000 The Bears further showed their power last night by defeating Winl Chester. 31 to 26. Winchester, coached by Stretch Murphy, former Marion high school and Purdue university star, has a veteran j team, one of the strongest in the school's history and has been plenty tough all year. Bob Dro. Berne center, tallied 16 points last night. 000 While the Jackets are preparing for Berne, the Commodores will be settling a feud of their own Thursday night. 000 The Commodores will battle the Kirkland Kangaroos Thursday night at the local floor. The Kangaroos recently defeated the Commodores at Kirkland and the local quintet will be out to even the ecore. 000 Decatur’s annual city grade series opened Tuesday night, with the St. Joe graders scoring a 28-22 victory over the Central team. The boys of both teams put on a good show and kept a large crowd interested all the way. 000 More figures from the statistics of helper Bob. Each team has won five games and lost one. Both squads lost heavily through graduation and ha,ve few veterans available. Hurst, the big Decatur center is a tower of, strength, but has been out of the; lineup for some time because of j sickness. He will probably be ’ ready to go against Berne. Hurst I was out of the harness Friday 1 night and yet the Jackets defeated North Side 31-28. And North Side . held Central to a 4-point win the previous week. Looks like a stormy we*-! ahead for the Bears, j Wid Be Close Personally we be'ieve the Berne Decatur game will be close. Some of the Decatur boys to watch be-, sides Hurst will be McConnell, j Smith, Brodbeck, (Friedt, Worthman and a few others. Decatur’s chief task, of course, will be to stop DRO. The breaks will win or lose this game, we believe. — Simon Schwartz, Berne Review. This bodes bad. The Decatur Yellow Jackets beat North Side’s ' Redskins on the Fort Wayne, floor, 31 to 28 and that without Hurst, who is said to be having that plague-oned appendicitis trouble. A rally in the last three minutes turned the tide in favor of the County Seat team. —Ed Liochty, Berne Witness. o Holiness Association Will Meet Sunday The Adams county holiness association will hold its monthly meeting at the Nazarene church In Berne, Sunday afternoon, December 20 at 2 o’clock.
