Every penny will go to 1 bring good cheer to the needy and no greater cause than that will ever demand your attention. Don't worry, this soft weather won't continue long and the subzero temperature will soon be so; apparent that we will wish for the spring rains similar to those of the past two or three days. The Good Fellow fund is open to you and those in charge will appreciate very much any contribution you care to make for the purpose of providing a merry Christmas to the poor boys and girls of the community. The government will spend eight hundred million dollars for new, highway construction in 1937 and it behooves Indiana to get her full share of that great sum. The state boasts as good a system as will be found any where and we must and will keep at the head of the procession. There seems to be no doubt that some changes to the benefit of those who have to pay will be made in the gross income tax law. Mr. Townsend promised to take the matter up after his election and to aid in correcting any unfair sections of the law. He is now working at that job and will keep his promises. Only a dozen more shopping days before Christmas and they will be busy ones for all of us. The lists published in this paper from day to day will be very helpful. Be sure to refer to the advertisements and fix in your mind those items you are interested in. It will make it so much easier for you and for the clerks. The party given in honor of Governor McNutt and his family Tuesday night at Indianapolis was the greatest manifestation of high regard ever given to any man in this state. More than 2,500 men and women attended and the program was an enthusiastic one, in which the popular and able governor was started on his campaign for the presidency. The governors of Texas and North Carolina w-ere among those to pay high tribute to Mr. McNutt and pledged their states for him in the 1940 convention. A woman has the right to change ■ her mind, they say. So has a man ' and so evidently has a community. In the regular election in November, the city of Van Wert, 0., voted down a referendum to levy' a three mill tax with which to paycertain operating expenses. A fewdays afterward they felt the result when the street lights were shut off because there was no money to pay the bills. A special election was called and this was 1 held Tuesday, resulting In a two-to-one vote in favor of the tax, which means $17.76 per SI,OOO valuation the next two years. We may complain about the utilities but when we have to be without them,

we soon favor most any thing that will restore them. The king has abdicated. Wheth-1 l er that was wise or foolish only 1 the future can tell with accuracy.; To many it looks as though King | Edward had quit because he didi ' not have confidence in his own ability to make the fight for his! ' common people against the Bald- 1 wins and the other conservatives of England. The great question back of the exciting love story giv-j en the public is of course the age' old battle of conservatives and liberalists. It looks very much as • though the royalists have won. What will happen as between the ex-king and his lady love also ! awaits the future and for some ! weeks, perhaps months or years, Edward and Wally will be away out in front in the news. In the meantime, Great Britain will have plenty to keep them busy. War is possible and it that occurs, the ex-king will be forgotten, but come what may. the of the past months in which Mrs. Simpson, an American society lady, twice divorced, took such a part, will go down in history to be frequently retold as time goes on. The testimonial banquet and ball given Tuesday evening for Governor McNutt and attended by more than two thousand of his admirers was looked on very generally as a Democratic love feast. It was an opportunity for those who have been loyal supporters of demoI cracy in the state and nation to express their appreciation of his leadership in Indiana. More than partisan significance was imparted, however, when governors came , from far-off Texas and North Carolina to lend their applause as enthusiastic admirers launched a ; boom for Governor McNutt as a presidential possibility in 1940. All Indiana is concerned when one of its citizens gets into the presidential limelight. We have had one President and four Vice-Presi-dents, each of whom was an object of state pride, regardless of his political afliiliation. It is, to be ■ sure, early to begin counting what may be hatched in the way of i 1940 presidential chickens. The | Governor’s friends at least are getting in on the ground floor. It is indeed a very flattering compliment they have paid in their j indorsement of him as their choice for the White House. —Indianapolis ’ 1 Si Lar.

A very sharp knife, or an old razor blade, should be used to cut through the : skin at the back. Heavy Colds Heavy colds on the chest, and coughs, are often relieved by applying ordinary mustard and goose grease. The Gas Range Purchase a blackboard eraser, such as used in the schoolroom, and use it for keeping the gas range clean. If it is rubbed over the range every day, no great amount of grease and dirt will ac--1 cumulated. o Trade in a Good Town — Decatur

STATE CENSUS ’ I TO BE TAKEN Indiana To Begin Census Os Male Voters On January 1 Indianapolis. Ind., Dec. 11 —(UP) The state of Indiana will begin a census of its male voters Jan. 1 to i comply with a state law which was antiquated by the advent of woman suffrage. The measure was enacted by the 1865 legislature to comtply with a provision in the constitution that an i enumeration of the state's voters' be made to decide the leglstlatlve apportionment. Although an amendment was enccbed to include negro males in the census there has been no enactment I to include the women—who formed 'more than 50 per cent of the Indiana ) electorate at the last general elec-1 tion. | According to the statute, the en-
