I Illy Pete) Decatur basketball fans greeted i with unanimous approval today the announcement that the Indiana state Catholic basketball tournament will be held in Fort Wayne this season. —ol)o — This will be the thiiu consecu- > tlve year the tourney has been held in Fort Wayne, and the past tourneys have proven highly successful, both from a playing and financial standpoint. Fort the majority of the Catholic teams in the state. Fort Wayne is centrally located, while the financial returns from the two previous tourneys have been satisfactory. Previous tourneys at Indianapolis proved failures financially. While early in the season for any predictions, this season’s tourney looms right now as a wide open affair. St. Mary's of Anderson is the defending champion and has another fought team this season. Other teams which seem pow-1 effu! include Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. —oOo—- — Decatur Yellow Jackets will play their first Northeastern Indiana conference game of the season Friday night, entertaining the Redskins from North Side of Fort Wayne on the local floor. —oOo—- — Jackets suffered their first defeat in five games last week at LaPorte. North Side gave Fort Wayne Central a terrific tussle last week before bowing to the Tigers, 32 to 28. The Commodores face another tough foe Friday, tangling with St. John’s of Delphos. Ohio at Delphos. The Commies will be out to get above the 500 mark again

DEAL FOR DEAN STILL IN AIR I Demands Os Cards May Prevent Any Trade For Dizzy Dean New York, Dw. 9- (U.R)—The St. Louis Cardinals. for some reason. .do not want Dizzy Dean. They i tire trying desperately to trade | him and the market has dwindled to one club, the Pittsburgh Pirates, The rest of the bidders have folded up—they don’t want Dizzy at any price. The Pirates have trimmed down their original offer to almost half what it was and it is on a takej it-or-leave-it basis. In other words, it’s up to the Cardinals whether they want to get rid of Dean or, keep him. It’s all very mysterious and no one will speak about it above a whisper. But Pittsburgh ie not: palpitating about its prospects. In the words of Pie Traynor: -We’ll take Dizzy all right but not at their price unless they guarantee we’ll have no headaches. They can’t guarantee ithat so it looks like the drtai is off.” Another reason why It looks like the deal ie off Is because the Pirates have withdrawn Arky Vaughan from all negotiations. William Benswanger, Pittsburgh president, said: ”1 wouldn’t trade Maughan even for Dean.” A couple of weeks ago the Pirates would have traded Vaughan, others and cash. Now the Pirates < have offered a “good pitcher and n good outfielder,” believed to be Paul Waner and Cy Blanton. I
