STATE CHAMPS i BEAT COMMIES I FRIDAY, 32-24 St. Mary’s Os Anderson Proves Too Tough For Commodores (By Pete Reynolds) A speedy, clever band of Gaels | from St. Mary’s of Anderson, state I Catholic high school champions,) proved too tough for the less experienced Decatur Commodores Friday night on the local floor, the Gaels winning by a score of 32 to 24. The Commodores battled the visitors on an even basis for the first four minutes, when the score was knotted at 4-4. St. Mary's then pulled away and at the end of the first quarter the state champs held a 10-4 margin. The Gaels maintained this margin during the second quarter and at the intermission the Commodores were trailing by an 18-10 count. St. Mary's increased its lead to 11 points during the third period, which ended with Anderson ahead. 29-18. The Commodores cut! this margin slightly in the final period but were never closer than eight points. Baker was Decatur’s leading scorer with four field goals and a free thow for a total of nine points, j Bill Voglewede tallied seven points and Hess and Gillig four each. JACKETS LOSE FIRST GAME OF SEASON FRIDAY LaPorte Slicers Defeat Yellow Jackets Friday, 40 To 25 The Decatur Yellow Jackets suffered their first defeat of the season Friday night, losing to the LaPorte Slicers at LaPorte. 40 to 25. The Jackets were badly handicapped by the illness of Bud Hurst, veteran center, who was able to play only a small part of the game. After a hard-fought first quarter, which ended in an 14-11 tie, the Slicers held Decatur to four points In the second quarter while tallying 13 to hold a 24-15 margin at the intermission. The two teams played on even terms through the third quarter, which ended. 30 to 21, but LaPorte pulled further ahead in the firfal period. Decatur’s scoring was well divided. Brodheck leading with three field goals for six points. Smith and Hurst each tallied five points. Broome was high scorer for laiPorte with five field goals and two foul tosses for 12 points.
