DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2 1936

<By Pete) The Decatur Commodores startied off the week's activities in Adams county basketball with a 2519 victory over St. Paul's at Marion last night. After a listwss three periods, the Commies camel baiji in the final quarter to win I by a fairly decisive margin. —oOo— Both Decatur teams face tough tests Friday night, the Commodores on the home floor and the Yellow Jackets on the road. —oOo — The Commodores will tangle with one of their arch rivals, St. Mary's of Anderson. The Gaels, last year winners of the state Catholic tourney, held at Fort Wayne, won two of three games from the Commodores last season. ——oOo— Both teams will present considerably different lineups from the ones used in the tourney, when-An-derson nosed out the Commodores in a semi-final tilt which was easily the feature tilt of the tournament. % None of the live Decatur regulars will be in the Commodore lineup Friday, while changes are reported in the Anderson roster, although St. Mary's lost only one regular, Broderick, through graduation. —oOo- - The Yellow Jackets likely will be hard pressed to maintain their perfect record Friday night, when they travel into the snow belt to battle the LaPorte Slicers at LaPorte. The Jackets have tvon their first four games of the season and will be out to make it five in a row. LaPort? laist week nosed out South Side of Fort Wayne and then swamped North Judson. Reports of other games, however, indicate LaPorte may not be as strong as these two games indi-

DIZZY DEAN IS maintopicin' BASEBALL MART I Possible T r a d e ( hies Topic; Cubs Buy Coast Outfielder —■—— Montreal, Que., Dec. 2. — (U.R> —i ! The nation's baseball men gather-1 ed today for the opening of the . National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues but one gangl- , ing member s absence overshadow-1 I ed the whole show. The minor league session con--1 vetted with important legislative I matters. The major leaguers re-' mained in the lobby to talk trade. • But Dizzy De»n —the main actor was a 1,000 miles away in Brad-. enton, Florida. The question on every tongue was: “Where will Dizzy Dean go7” I It was taken for granted thatj Dizzy, most colorful, if not the ! best, pitcher in the land has donnM a St. Louis Cardinal uniform • for the last time. Branch Rickey, master mind ofi the Cardinals' vast baseball prop-, erties. said: “We will make any deal that will strengthen the Cardinals. Dean or any other player will go , if we can bolster our team." The bidding for Dean is appar- , ently between the New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds. War- ' ren G. Giles, business manager of the Reds, has confirmed the fact that his club offered $200,000 cash for Dean and was turned down. Rickey won’t say yes or no about the Reds' offer, but he sljFiy remarks: "Dollars can’t run bases for the Cardinals.” The surmise is that the Cardinals want players and cash for , Dean, with the Giants ready to

i part with pitcher Hal Schumach- • tilth Idel’ K'filfi.' Ml >y" ,OV.tfl“!'l i'er Hank Lieber, and a bundle of ■•ash to get the Cardinals’ pitching ' ace. Pittsburgh also Is a bidder for ■ Dean, but the Pirates' offer does i not include a pitcher needed by I the Cardinals. I Shortstop Arky Vaughan, 1935 National league batting champion, ■ outfielder Woody Jensen, and l catcher Tom Padden are the play-1 j ers the Pirates are said to have to put up ns bait for Dean along ■ with cash. Among the other rumors is one' that Brooklyn wants to make the' transaction n three-cornered deal. 1 ' The Dodgers want Vaughan and are willing to put up Van Mungo,' their star pitcher, to get the Pir-' ate shortstop and other players from the Cardinals. One club that definitely does not want Dean is the Chicago Cubs. Manager Charlie Grimm appreciates Dean’s value but does not i want him at the price of breaking up his ball club. i "We are building.” said Grimm, 1 ' “not tearing down. To get Dean we would have to sacrifice too much.” The Cubs made the first deal yesterday when they gave three players valued at $50,000 and cash said to be $50,000 for outfielder • Joe Marty. San Francisco outfielder ano Pacific coast league hatting champion. The players who go to the coast are outfielder Johnny Gill, third baseman Gene Lillard, and infielder Joe Vitter, who played last year with the Portsmouth, Va., Piedmont league club.
