Commodores Rally To Defeat Jefferson FW
COMMIES BEIT WARRIOR FIVE TUESDAY,29-27 Commodores Stage Sensational Rally In Final Quarter To Win (By Bob Shraluka) Held to three measly field goals and a foul toss by a Jefferson quintet that hit the basket from every angle with unerring accuracy dur-j ing the first half, the Commodores ; flashed a brilliant attack in the, fourth period to eke out a 29-27, win on their own floor Friday night. I Playing without the services of! two regulars, who did not partici- [ pate because of school discipline, the Commies saw the Warriors slap the ball in from all sides to take a commanding lo point lead | at the half. Led by Sipe and Mosser in a barrage of field goals, the Warriors did everything but throw the ball from the bench, each shot flipping through the net with uncanny accuracy to pile up a 12-2 lead at the first quarter, meanwhile allowing Coach Laurent's charges but a single field goal by Gillig. The second quarter was but a repetition of the first, the Jeffer-1 son five holding the Commies to i two fie,d goals, one each by Gillig [ and Bollinger, who replaced Vogle-1 wede. The half ended with the Tharpmen leading. 17-7. The Commodores fared but lit-' tie better in the third quarter,! gaining but a point, to trail 15-25 , at the start of the final period. Then came the Frank Merriwell

WEmwi ■ a (By Pete) Decatur's Yellow Jackets will be after their third consecutive victory of the season tonight when they meet Hoagland on the local floor. Hoagland has been consistently tough for the past two or three seasons and will give the j Yellow Jackets all they want • to handle in the way of oppo- ■ sitlon. The reserve teams of the two schools will meet in the preliminary tilt. Both Decatur teams will see action again Friday night, with the Yellow Jackets entertaining Winamac here and the Commodores traveling to Kirkland to battle the Kangaroos. The Commodores staged a Frank Merriwell finish last night to nose out a 29-27 victory over the Warriors from Jefferson township. Apparently hopelessly out of the running at the end of the third quarter. the Commies suddenly came, to life to mark up their second! triumph of the season. Incidentally, two of the Commodore regulars were forced to watch the game from the sidelines. Basketbawl has been informed it was more “bunny” trouble. —oOo— Prompt and proper action by officials of both Decatur schools in disciplining their rabbit hunting basketball players quite likely will bring an abrupt halt to skipping school to stock the family larder. (Or did they?). The Berne Bears bounced back

in grand fashion last night after that defeat handed them by Hartford City last week. The Bears trounced the New Haven Bulldogs in their own doghouse last night. 38 to 26. ’Twas none other than Bob Dro. veteran Berne center, who showed his Bear mates the way to victory with a grand total of 17 points. It is still the opinion of this columnist that Bob is still one of the ' best natural athletes to see action in this section of the state for many a year. —oOo — In addition to the Yellow Jacket game tonight, three other tilts are scheduled for Adams county teams. The Kirkland Kangaroos will entertain Monmouth at Kirkland, Pleasant Mills will play Jefferson of Whitley county at the Commodore gym in this city, and Montpelier will play at Hartford township. -000— There has been considerable discussion and difference In opinion among basketball coaches and players in this section of the state concerning rule 15. section 4 which deals with a player leaving the court. It hud been the boast of the Chicago rap{id transit lines that it had carried (more than 160.000.000 passengers a year, with only three deaths over a 10-year period. The crash occurred shortly after 6 p. m.—-height of the rush period—and both trains were loaded heavily. Most passengers were downtown office workers, others shoppers carrying Thanksgiving day parcels. At Granville avenue station is a switch where every night the schedules bring the express and “el'' train into just position. It calls for delicate timing. Wilbur Helm, an Evanston investment broker, described the system this way: “I’ve been taking the train (the "el” train) almost regularly for a number of years. Each evening a few moments after the train switches onto the local track, the North Shore roars by on the express track. I have ofteh thought that the timing of the two trains was too close for safety.” Last night it was. The rapid transit train, bound for Evanston,
