Get ready for Thanksgiving. Enjoy the day with the family, one 1 of the happiest holidays of the year when no place seems as good as home. King Edward may think that selecting a wife is a personal matter. but can’t deny that he is gett- f ing a lot of free advise in regards to his preference for the dashing American born woman. Join the Red Cross, be a member of the greatest charitable organisation in the world. The campaign closes next Thursday and by that time we must hare a thousand members in Adams county. The spurt in business is reflected through the newspapers and magazines which carry increased, advertising these days. The daily papers arc brisk with life and one ol\ the greatest holiday buying* sprees in history is in store. Every body in Indiana is hoping and praying and pulling for the recovery of their favorite humorist and author, George Ade, stricken with a serious heart attack shortly after arriving in Miami. Mr. Ade is seventy years old and has longj been recognized for his ability as 1 a writer. The average citizen doesn’t know or care just why the big companies are raising wages and declaring dividends, but they do know that the circulation of these hundreds of millions of dollars is sure to help them and the entitc country. And after all, isn’t tnat what we want? Right now is the best opportunity you will have in ten years to purchase property at a bargain. Those who do so now will make some easy money because there i is no doubt of advances the next year. Every thing points to it and the signs arc unmistakable. Buy! now, either farm or city property, and you can sell in a year or less' at a handsome profit. Decatur needs iw o hundred houses, according to those who arcin a position to know That, would add a thousand or so to th<- population of the city and place us in an enviable position. Just how to I got them is the problem that is! worrying those who wish the city to go forward. We never had a bitter chance and never will have. It a up to all of us to do some-i thing about it. The Red Cross campaign is proceeding iu a most satislhctpry way and you will want yotrr name on the list. Membership dues are only one dollar, though of course you can give five if you wish to. Half the money is retained in the county for such uses an may arise during the year while the balance; is forwarded to headquarters and!
is used Ir. territories where uninspected catastrophes occur. Join now. Mr. Tugwell has resigned as Resettlement administrator and will : take advantage of the opportunit let* now offered tor making some I real money in private business. He has been accused and maligned and abused but has gone steadi ily on with a big job. His activities in business will certainly disabuse the minds of those who have pictured him as a red and an undesirable citizen. He will succeed in whatever he embarks in. Van Wert, in an effort to have street lights, will vote again De- , cember Bth on the question of > whether or not a three mill tax I may be added to take care of this I cost. In the regular election the ; tax lost by 391 votes but the of--filial* believe it was because it was not generally understood. Now - it becomes a straightout question , of whether or not they want lights badly enough to pay the necessary cost of having them. Decatur’s new and reduced elec1 trie light rates become effective I today, the savings being passed unto the November meter readings. It is estimated the reduced rates will mean savings of more than $7,000 to customers of the municipal plant. The top electric rate is now five cents per kilowatt, matching the second lowest group in the state. It's a good showing for those In charge of the plant and a fact appreciated by the public. The WPA has decided that its workers may remove snow from he highways during the coining winter, the county or highway department paying more for their ime. Heretofore, because it was eared this would interfere with those regularly employed, this work was not allowed. With the . demand tor labor becoming greater each day, the ruling has been made , that when emergencies arise, as is the case after a big snow storm, the WPA workers may be used to ’ hurry the work along, and then resume their regular jobs. Madame Ernestine SchumannHeink, tworld famous contralto singer, whose sweet voice has tor j many years stirred the best emo- * tions in men and women, who has sung before kings and who spent : much time entertaining the soldiers of the World War. who was widely loved and respected, is dead I at her home in Hollywood where i she has resided the past several' years. She suffered from some disease of the blood which caused hemorrhages of the throat and lungs and her death came almost; without struggle. She was ono of the grandest women in the world and was for years its most popular j singer. The closing of her career { has caused sincere sadness every l where.
