She , won't talk to him, or to any other , reporter, except about her new ' Goldwyn picture, “The Woman's > Touch”, s | Miracles do happen. Margaret Tallichet, a Dallas girl, was promised a screen test by a Paramount talent scout. She arrived i here with $35 and her mother to discover that the scout was no longer with the company. Not being as hard-hearted as studios are supposed to be, Paramount gave her a job in the publicity department. She was trying to > resign herself to being a secretary when Carole Lombard came up and spoke to her one noon in the commissary. Carole was so impressed that she took the quaking secretary in to see Adolph Zukor, arranged for her to enter the Paramount talent school and has 1 just financed an expensive portrait; sitting for her protege. And yet | they accuse film stars of being j interested only in themselves! We just heard a swell story | about the danger of circumstantial 1 evidence. Lionel Braham, the English actor, came to the coast J to play the role of Mammon in I “Everyman ”. He has been lingering around with the idea of movie v.’ork and, the other night, went to take Joanne Hawthorne to dinner. When they came out of her apartment, three police radio cars were waiting for them. The astounded Braham almost dropped his monocle when told that he was driving a stolen car. He and his companion were questioned for half an hour at the Beverly Hills station and for another half hour at the Hollywood division. The truth, as it eventually came out, was that Martha Raye reported the car stolen several months ago. She recovered it herself, but neglected to tell the police. Then she traded the car in on a new one

and Braham bought It from a dealer. The payoff was that when Braham was finally freed and on his way home, he was picked up by another radio car and had to go through the explanation all over again. You Asked Me and I'm Telling You! Sadie Freeman. Brooklyn: Yes, it is very possible that you saw John Beal in New York. He has been vacationing at Harmon on the Hudson. You ask for more news about the actor. Here is one item. Beal is doing a series of children's drawings which he will turn over to the Assistance league on his return to Hollywood to auction off for charity. There was shivering in the boots at Paramount when Claudette Colbert had to topple off an eight-foot stepladder for “Maid of Salem”. Claudette was frightened, too, for she is just recovering from her recent head injury. She finally agreed when Fred Mac Murray. the huskiest man on the set, stood underneath to catch her. Besides this, they piled up straw all around him. But he didn't miss and she made the scene without injury. Here and there In Hollywood.... Lewis Stone wires he is the unluckiest man in the world. The latest is that Randy Scott's socialite bride, the former Mariona duPont Somerville, has promised to give Hollywood a try, but if she doesn’t like it, she’ll return to Virginia. She wanted Randy to stay there, but he wouldn’t give up his screen career. Today’s Puzzle: What idyllic romance between two well-known young Hollywood players nearly came to an end, which accounts for the fact that he took another girl to an important preview? The trouble has been patched up now, we hear.
