RUGDEPARTMENT MUCHENLARGED New And Larger Rug Stock Is Housed In Remodeled Room Not only does the entire first floor of the beautiful new Schafer Store boast of many changes, for the second floor, too has been remodeled. In the past Schafer’s has always carried a large stock of Axminister Rugs in many styles airtt patterns. However, when the decision to remodel was made, it was also decided by the company to increase the rug stock, and devote an entire room for the display and sale of rugs. Formerly, u-t cabinets, wicker furniture, unfinished furniture, occasional chairs and rugs were carried in the same room. This room, while adequate in size for this merchandise, was poorly lighted, and the ceiling was unfinished. Hence, there was a field for improvement. Hand in hand with this decision to - remodel the rug department cafhe the decision from The Schafer Co., wholesale hardware and home furnishing concern, to handle Axminister rugs. A contract for ' several car loads of rugs was let by The Schafer Co. to the Hodges Copet Co. of New York City. It was necessary that the Schafer Cm have a display room in which to.show the sample rugs of their , ’ ant stock to their customers, so 1 the agreement by which The Schafer. Store rug department would i serve as a display rug room for i

the writer han been closely aud intimately connected socially and In a business say with the owners of the Schafer Hardware Company. It in certainly a pleasure to recall I the fact that Cbalmer C. Schafer, who has followed in the footsteps of his father, has been able and willing to keep this wonderful instittMion in our midst, realizing all the while that Um customers of this store, past and prseent, for the last sixty-two years have been satisfied with fair dealing and up-to-deje merchandise. o • — QUADRIGA CLOTH •>\ fVVPI I Hi 1M PM■) F ONE I It is first singed and put through a water bath. It is then taken through a boiling process for several hours to remove excess waxes and oils. From there it is put into a chloride of lime solution and through rollers which squeeze out most of the solution, leaving only a sufficient amount to permit the bleaching action to occur. The .qth then lies in the white bins for a varying period while the actual bleaching is accomplished by the action of the oxygen liberated by the chlortfle of lime. It is then
washed thoroughly in pure water I to complete the bleaching process. The cloth Is now ready icon)- 1 pletely bleached) for the dyeing 1 process. Wound into rolls, it is 1 ready to be tent to the dye house 1 for application of plain colors, or ' to the printing plant for the printing of fancy designs Only the best , of dyes are used in Quadriga. I 1 The actual process of dyeing decolor or shade. The shade to be pends upon the result desired in ' dyi’d is sent to the laboratory 1 where a formula is worked out to produce this shade. The dye house uses this formula each time the shade is produced. After the cloth is dyed, it is given its famous needleized finish. Printing Probably the most interesting of all the finishing processes is that of printing. The first requisite tn selecting a design Is to have something worth while printing, a style that is both pleasing to the eye and commercially salable. Many of the ideas originate with the makers of Quadriga and then drawn by an artist in accordance with their suggestions. Some designs, however, are prepared by design studios which are in busi-
ness for that purpose. A design, in its original state, is merely a hand painted pattern drawn by an artist in one color combination only. After the design is finally accepted, four other color (omulnations must be drawn, making five in all The design is then sent to the' engraving shop. The sketch maker Tt.’st must determine the practical repeat of the pattern in order to determine the proper circumference of the copper rollers used in the actual engraving. These tubular copper rollers are used so that the design is repeated constantly, both lengthwise and crosswise on the clofh. The pattern is then enlarged about five times and drawn upon a zinc plate with a pencil. The zinc plate is then colored to conform to the original painting and is used as a guide for tracing the pattern when it is placed in the "panto-graph.” This machine transfers the design to the copper rollers. A different roller is necessary for each color in the pattern, there-
