The total received this year in this county from gross and excise taxes is $85,65V and that is $17,477 more than paid in. “The gasoline taxes have paid . for the best road system in AinerI ica and the grot-- income tax, with proper corrections, as promised by Mr. Townsend, will do the same for the schools and is doing it now. i The Springer cure reminds me of the school teacher who said: 'lt' i 1 lay three eggs here and five eggs b'tre, how many will I have’’ to which the tough boy replied: ‘Aw, you can't do it.’ Nor can Mr. Springer make good on his wild promises." “Four years ago Adams county raised $710,000 in taxes, while this year you raised $488,000. Doesn't that prove you are benefltting?" Mr. Crawford explained file' 2% club, said he was a member of it and proud of it, for it was the only honest and decent way he knew of to Vaise the money to operate | a campaign. "That money is paid by those who receive their pay from the state and is right. There J is not a department in the state' that is not being operated for less money now than it was under the Republican administration," the speaker said, and he closed with an appeal that the Democratic party be continued in power The big crowd then adjourned to the basement where a luncheon of sandwiches, coffee, ice cream and cake was served and where all enjoyed an hour's visit. It was one of the best political meetings ever held in the county. o Trade In a Good Town — Decatur

TALLMADGE IS !; FOUND GUILTY 11 Faces Life Imprisonment For Murdering His Wife ( Oregon. 111., Oct. 23.—(U.PJ—Guy Tallmadge, bald embalmer waiting to be sentenced to life imprisonment. protested from his jail cell today that there was still something untold of why he killed his ( wife for the love of a red-haired widow. He didn't want to talk of the verdict returned by a jury of former acquaintances yesterday, but admitted he was relieved to have escaped the electric chair which the state had demanded. “I didn't hope for much because that's when you're disappointed,” he said. The jury found Tallmadge, 56, 1 guilty of murdering his wife, Bes- . sie, 51. and fixed the penalty at life 1 imprisonment. Judge Harry Edwards indicated he would senj fence him within a week. The verdict appeared to end the I case which excited interest of almost every resident of this rural community which has known both j Tallmadge and his victim since childhood. Tallmadge's attorney, B. J. Knight, said he would uot ask for a new trial, and would advise his relatives not to do so. State's Attorney S. Donald Crowell remained insistent that the murder was "a most vicious and cowardly

Mrs. Frances Birch, comely cosmetician whose courtship by the bespectacled Rockford undertaker 22 years her senior culminated in the slaying, declined comment from ner Rock Island home.
