EARL BROWDER FREED TOuAlf Communist Candidate For President Released From Terre Haute .Jail — Terre Haute. Ind., Oct. I.—<U.R>" 1 Earl Browder, communist candidate for president thrown In jail , yesterday to forestall a communist I ; rally, was released today at 8:45 ia. m., just 25 hours and 15 min-j utes after his arrest. Vagrancy charges on which Browder, Waldo Frank. New York novelist; Seymour Walden, New I York, communist national committeeman; Charles Stadtfelt, Indiana l communist secretary, and Andrew Remes, Indianapolis, were held ' overnight were dismissed by the prosecution at the opening of city court. Authorities were agreeable. They I had accomplished their main purpose by preventing Browder from delivering in person a scheduled campaign address last night. Browder likewise was pleased. From his jail cell he called upon the nation to witness his imprisonment as evld< nee of “the rise of | fascism.” His speech was read over a local radio station at the appointed hour by Daxid Bentall, his attorney, while L. H. Quinn, secretary of I the Terre Haute Merchants Association. stormed outside the locked door ot the studio demanding the key and asking for volunteers , to aid in a forcible ejection of the speaker. , ; At the conclusion of Bentali's address Mayor Richard Mcßae. In- ■ dianapolis, spokesman for the national Americanization committee of the American Legion, broadcast an appeal to "save the United States from communism, fascism and all other “isms.” Terre Haute, Ind., Oct. L— (U.Fb ! David J. Bentall, attorney for Earl
Browder, communist presidential candidate, said today he will file suits charging false arrest against Mayor Sam Beecher, Police Chief James C. Yates, "and others.” The suit will be filed in Vigo superior court late today or tomorrow, Bentall said. Browder will return to Terre Haute to testify in the case, he added. NEWSPAPER ID SUPPORT F. D. R, New York Times Favors Re-Election Os President Roosevelt New York, Oct. 1 — (U.R) —The New York Times announced today that it would support President Roosevelt for re-election. In a two column editorial the newspaper criticized “the nationalism" of the Republican party and gave three considerations, which it regards as dominant, that entered into its decision. They were: “First, the President is keen enough judge of public opinion to make his second administration more conservative than his first. "Second, the President's re-elec-tion will provide insurance against radicalism of the sort which the i United States has most to fear. “Third, the narrow nationalism for which the Republican party stands today, is in itself a policy, which, If put into force, would . carry us rapidly in the direction of both regimentation and radicalI ism.” _o — Hoppers Profit Farmer Cedar City, Utah. — (U.R) — Iron 1 county farmers turned a plague into a good business proposition recently. They sold grasshoppers that overran the country to a fish bait company and also drew profit 1 from the filming of sequences of the motion picture, "Good Earth. "
