WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE Life te pretty Ardeth Carroll meant working in a shop, an unhappy home with her aunt, and the courtship of Neil Burke, to whom marriage would mean a continuance of her drab existence. When fate in the guise of the socially prominent Jeanette Parker, offers her the charge of a shop she is opening, Ardeth accepts. Her happiness knows no bounds when she meets her idol, Ken Gleason, often seen with Cecile, Jeanette's younger sister. Ardeth and Ken see much of each other. Announcement of Ken's engagement to Cecile stuns Ardeth. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY.
CHAPTER XIII. CHANGING light warned Ardeth that it was getting late. She rose wearily and shook the sand from her clothes. She didn’t want to get home so late that she would have to explain to Aunt Stel. . . . Her heart was too sore tonight for explanations. The city closing about her again as she rattled homeward on the empty street car. Swallowing her up in its grayness. Holding her fast. . . . Her own block, shabby and shame-faced in the twilight. She dismounted, started up the street Caught her breath painfully. . . . A car. at the corner where Ken always parked. Ken—getting out, coming toward her, white to the lips. Eyes, stormy blue leaping at her through the thick light. Her heart leaped at the pain on his young face. “Ardeth—where have you been all day?” She answered dully. “Docs it ] matter 1” “You know it does!” hotly. “Jeanette said you were ill. But at home they knew nothing when i I phoned.” “You phoned!” His eyes were piercing now “Os I eourse. And then I drove up here. 1 was going to wait until you' came if it took all night.” He i grasped her elbow. “We can’t talk : here—get in the car.” She wrenched her arm away. “No!” "It’s that story, isn’t it? That I thing in The Spy?” His voice was I tight. “Well—yes.” He gave a short little laugh ! which held no mirth. “I knew it. I Blazes! Get in the car—we have to talk ” “No.” “Yes, I said!” the words came | between his clenched teeth. Then i his eyes were pleading. “Ah. I sweetheart. . . . I’ve been nearly i crazy. . . . We can’t talk here! Sweetlieart, please” She got in the car. Joy In Her Heart. She was swept by conflicting emotions. She tried to cling to her cold anger but it was shot by the sense of warm triumph. Tremulous joy just in knowing Ken was beside her. Her body alive to his nearness. Joy—singing in her heart. Unxie r her lashes she could see his profile, white and set as he kept hjs gaze on the traffic ahead. That clean cut profile her fingers itched to draw. Lips tightly pressed together, eyes narrowed between their lashes. No chance to talk in the crowded streets. Mot a word passed between them as he steered the. car out Fell street. 1 he entrance to the park, swimming in twilight. Gray bulk® of trees wheeling backward against the sky. Lemon colored headlights as oilier cars swept up the drive toward them. Ken turned the wheel, the car shot down a narrow side road beside a lake. Stopped. He shut off the engine. A breathless moment when the silence seemed to rush in. How very still it was. The sunset wind had'stopped. The biack interlacing kreec overhead were Motionless

against the grey sky. Between their branches the first evening star shone. Still ... so still Ardeth seemed to hear the pounding of their hearts shaking their bodies. He bad turned his eyes, drawing her own up to meet his gaze. “So vou saw that thing in The Spy—” Her hands clenched tightly in her lap, then relaxed. And suddenly she was calm and proud—and a little cruel, seeing how shaken he was. “Well . . . why not? After all —you have a right to choose...” “Don’t talk like that—” “Now-a-days people aren’t Puritanical. A man can’t be engaged to every girl he kisses ...” She was hurting him and she would have been less than woman if she hadn’t pressed the advantage home. “1 suppose I should—should

congratulate you. Cecile is—is charming. But why you were so reticent about telling anyone—” “You little devil!” he shook her slightly and K is eyes blazed. Then, with a sudden collapse of manner. “Oh—Ardeth ... if you knew how rotten 1 feel—” The pretense betwaxn them was swept away on a hood of honesty. “But—it’s true, Ken?” A momenfe- so deep, so still that the girl could hear a duck flap over the pond below. Flapping—splashing water—flapping. The man’s eyes had gone away from her searching gaze. Ardeth felt the blood draining from her face. Finally, “No.” said Ken. “I’m not engaged to Cecile. “Oh . .!” he made a baffled gesture. “It’s so damned hard to put this straight to you. Like a fool 1 kept hoping things would straighten themselves out. I dreaded Just this very happening.” His voice was wretched. A Mother's Wish. “Well—it’s like this,” he went on more calmly after a moment. “I’ll nave to teli you everything so you’ll understand my position. 1 were just kids, they began plan ning we’d marry. You know—a thing like that starts as a joke and before you know it everyone expects it’s actually going to happen. I didn’t especially mind—” He stopped, grew red. “That sounds ghastly conceited. 1 didn’t mean it that wav. ... I just never thought much aoo jt it. I never said anything serious to Cecile. We did joke about it—but it was only a joke. You see, Ardeth?” His pleading eyes went to the quiet profile of the girl beside him. At her short nod iie continued. “Cecile wanted her fun before she married. And I didn't care one way or the other. I see now that I only kept the thing up to please Mother. And then I met you.” She would not meet his eyes Her gaze was on the bright star. But she felt his intent gaze oi her face. He was so close his breath stirred her hair. “I went wild about you. Ardeth. It was the real thing at last. Oh, darling, there have been times when I just had to bite my tongue to keep from blurting out how much I loved you. I wouldn’t—without figuring how I could ask you to marry me.” “Why?” It was only a whisper through her stiff lips. And still she would not look at him.
“My mother. I didn’t know how I was going to tell her. She’s just set her heart on me marrying Cecile—” “Oh—!” There was a thin edge of scorn curling about that. She felt that he flushed angrily. “No! That’s not fair—what you're thinking. I’m no mama-boy. You don’t understand!” "Surely a man has a right to choose his own wife,” she said coldly. “You’re right! But you don’t understand. I don’t suppose anyone else ever had such a mess to face.” He drew a long weary sigh. “Let me begin at the beginning. You will have to see, Ardeth! There was just my mother and me left when my father died. Mother’d always been a petted I tell you this so you’ll see how splendid she wag—doing what she did. Her parents had spoiled her. Dad spoiled her. One of those beautiful, helpless women everyone waited on. “And then, all in a moment, the world she knew—the warm safe, easy world—gone. My Dad died unexpectedly. And she found he’d gambled in stacks and iM’d lost I everything.” IMrllU, IMS. to HIM Feature. SsndUMe. Ina (T* Be Coatinund)
