McNUTT Indiana Bankers’ President Expresses Optimism Indianapolis, May 21.—<u.R>—The banks of the nation are fraught with uncertainty as to the position to be held by them In the fuTUre, B. D. Mitchell, Kokomo, declared in his address as president of the ; Indiana Bankers Association at the 40th annual convention today. He expressed optimism, however, in the belief that "the banking system is gradually but slowly being brought to a more perman- ! ently sound basis of operation.” Mitchell gave the five reasons the rapid increase in bank deposits during the past year, including (1) i restoration of public confidence in I financial institutions; (2) a higher ' level of industrial activity attend'ed by profits rather than losses; I (3) federal deposit insurance; (4) | United States government deficit i financed by continuous increased borrowing; and (5) the influx of

The agreement, signed today by representatives of railway unions . and managements, becomes effec- j tive June 18. It covers allow- 1 ances to employes whose jolts are | affected by the joint action of two or more carriers with respect , to unification, consolidation, merger, or pool. The agreement specifically provides, however, that it does not apply to "rises and falls and changes in volume or character of employment brought about solely by other causes.” A statement authorized by George M.
