May 15. — (U.R) -- With the coveted pole and other choice positions in the starting lineup at stake, approximately 15 drivers will compete tomorrow in | the first qualifying trials of the j 24th annual Memorial Day 500mile race. Counteracting the desire to whirl around the brick oval at dizzy speeds will be the drivers’ knowledge of thte fact they must complete the 25-mile qualify- i ing run on two and one-half gal [ lons of fuel, as compared to the; three gallons allowed last year. j Rex Mays. 23-year-old Glendale. | Calif., driver who won the pole j position with 120.736 miles per hour last year, probably will be j among those trying for the covet-I ed position in the 1936 race.. Drivers and track observers virtually were unanimous in the belief that the fastest qualifying time this year would not surpass 120 miles per hour due to the gasoline restriction. . The qualifying trials also will ] serve as .an elimination, since only j the fastest 33 of the some 50 cars entered will be allowed to start the Memorial Day classic. o Toledo—(U.R) —A hundred Libbyhigh school senior boys have started a weekly class in ballroom danc- ■ ing in the school gymnasium. Engert and other members of the American legation at Addis Ababa by British forces recalls the incident which gave birth to the famous remark, “Blood is thicker than water”. These words were spoken by Captain Josiah Tattnall of the United States navy when he went to the rescue of British forces'in China when they faced overwhelming odds. His act created a new feeling of goodwill between United States and Britain. Tattnall’s career as a U. S. naval officer ended when the Civil war broke out, however. Tattnall, a Georgian, was made a commander in the Confederate navy and served until the end of the war when he fled to Canada, finally returning to Georgia to spend his remaining years.
