The guardian •f a toll bridge In Missouri mistook the conveyance for a public carrier and refused to let it pass the bridge They tried to convince him that Beery was the movie star, but Wallie was wearing a derby, of all things, and didn’t look Ike himself. The ol<i man never did admit II was Beery, but finally agreed that the station wagon might not be a bus and let th<* party through As it turned out. their troubles had only started. Drivers of the real buses along the road decided that here was a bootleg rival, so they tipped oft the cops. Beery was stopped almost 20 times by officers and had to talk his way through. The payoff came In Wagon Mound. N. M.. a dot on the map. where Beery stopped for gas. Three Indians, who had been waiting for a Las Vegas bus. started to board the station wagon. The film star’s whole party save them arguments, but the Indians refused to be impressed and finally, tn desperation. Wallie let them come aboard When told that Katharine Hepburn H* considering a trip across the country in her station wagon. Wallie said she is crazy if she tries it. Jack Oakie’s ma is very sweet about his marriage to Venita Varden. ‘■l’ve had him for 30 years and I bine nothing to complain about.” she said “I guess Jack’s really in love thia rime, for that boy of mine is tracking in circles.
