DEMAND REPEAL GROSS INCOME Retailers Plan Mass Demonstration Against Tax Wednesday Indiana (Kilis. Mar. 10. (U.R) Independent grocers and meat dealers will demand repeal of the 1933 gross income tax law in a mass demonstration at the statehouse tomorrow. Officials of the Associated Retail- ! ers of Indiana estimate that 5,000 : will join in the march on the capiitol. I The retailers will seek a public . hearing in the senate on the bill I introduced last Friday by Senator ■Ralph H. Jernegan, R.. Mishawaka, icalling for repeal of the tax law. I The bill has been referred to the ! finance committee. Walter J. Merger, Indianapolis, president of the Indianapolis Retail Meat and Grocers’ Association, explained the grocers’ position. • Retail food dealers are especially opposed to the gross income tax because it confiscated the assets of the independent dealers," he said. “It is particularly oppressive because of the rapid turnover pecuj liar to our line of business.
