Offensive Threats Os Big Ten
By EVERETT S. DEAN. Iliad Basketball Couch, Indiana University. Great offensive basketball players are masters of one or more offensive fundamentals. Some of the important fundamentals are shooting, passing, drlbbing, footwork. feints, fakes and basketball finesse. Some good players are “naturals" and find most of these fundamentals easy; others have a hard time acquiring them through hard fundamental drills. The Big Ten each year provides more than its share of offensive stars. This year is no exception. Look at Bill Baarlow of Chicago. Bill's greatest asset is his ability to relax during the game. This aids his basket shooting accuracy a great deal. Haarlow is the greatest one hand shot every to play in the conference. Last year he was selected all America forward. Kessler of Purdue was runner up to Haarlow last year in scoring. Kessler is an uncanny left hander and like Haarlow is capable of scoring 15 or 20 points any ; time. He is the captain and again I the key man on the Purdue team r this year. Whitlinger of Ohio State is the midget of the Ohio team. He was third high scorer of the conference last year. HisTiest shot is an overhead, two hand jump shot which he uses around the foul , ring. j Gunning of Indiana is probably the speed boy of the conference. I He is at his best in a fast break game. Gunning is a fine shot but

would rather pass th n shoot. When going good his guard hu.i i ' a large evening's work before I | him. j Johnnie Townsend of Michigan f has earned the title of the best . passer in the conference. When . Johnnie feeds the ball to his team 1 mates, Michigan become a very . powerful team He ranks just . above Gunning in conference scor , ing at present. Rudness, his teami mate is a very small man with a ! very big point total. Roscoe of Minnesota has start- ■ ed things on the hardwood as he . did last fall for Bernie Bierman's . football team. Roscoe has a very ■ unorthodox one hand shot which i is as dangerous as Haarlow's hook ■ shot from the corner. He develop- • ed this one hand shot because of i a broken arm injury during his| i high school days which prevented 'a two hand shot. He is regarded I • as one of the best in Minnesota • basketball history. Combs of Illinois is another - speedy player who plays either • forward or guard. He possesses i basketball finesse and has been i the star of the lllini up to the [ present time. • There are many other fine ofi fensive players in the conference ■ who are capable to turning in i great offensive games. The change t in the basketball rules is favoring 1. the offense in some respects; and jin other respects — no. However, ’' the increased scoring of the major- . I ity of the teams is an indication ; I that the rule changes have helped t these offensive stars.
