The New Basketball Rules By Everett S. Dean, Head Basketball Coach at Indiana
(Editor's note: We have arrang- : ed for local basketball fans a series 1 of articles by Everett S. Dean,' head oach at Indiana University and allconference center during his playing days at 1. U. Dean will analyze the new rules and discuss interesting phases of Indiana high school and Big Ten basketball as the season progresses. A feature of the Dean series will be a Test Your Basketball Knowledge section. Today Coach Dean discusses the three-second rule: next w’eek the new free throw rulej. | — The new basketball rules for the season of 1935-36 have caused considerable comment. In the early days of basketball, with each | new rule change there came a storm of criticism and doubt as to the wisdom of the change. Now. when new rules are made, they i have been made after a period of i expei .’mentation. TTe rule changes have been suggested by many state i basketball coaches associations and enacted by the national basketball committee. This committee is • made up of a sincere group of men! with the welfare ot the game at heart. Rule changes are made neces-| sary by one department of the. game outgrowing another department To keep the right balance between the offence and defense it is necessary ~ make some alter-. ations in the rules. These changes I are indicative of progress.

The Three-Second Rule One of the most important rule ! changes for this year reads: “A player may not remain in his tree throw area, with or without the bail, for more TTian three seconds while the ball is in play and in possession or control of his team.” This is one of the best rule changes in recent years for it has legislated ths stationary pivot play out of the game. This play caused much roughness such as holding, pushing, charging and hipping. The elimination of the stationI ary pivot play will give us more ! action with a greater premium placed on team play of the pass and cut variety. This rule is a blow at the big man who cannot handle himself well. This rule will not be hard to administer. i either by coaches or officials, if the reason for the rule is observed. , Coaches must coach within the i spirit of the rule and officiate must | know the reason for the rule and ; then there will be little doubt but that the rule will ake care of itst self. Test Your Knowledge Next week the new free throw rule will be discussed. Answers Ito the following questions can be I found in that article. Test your knowledge now. What is the new free throw rule? How will it speed up the game? Wil it lead to the complete elimination of the center j jump? Does it lessen the effec- | tiveness of the, big man in basketball? I,
