CHICAGO CUBS WHIP GIANTS Beat League Leaders In Long 11-Inning Battle Thursday New York, Aug. 23.-(U.R>—Taunts from the shadows of the dugont—"you can’t take It" had the Ch-I-1 cago Cubs up In arms today. The New York Giants hurled that challenge aj Charlie Grimm's "kid team" yesterday and the Cubs' answer was a 4-3 victory over the league-leaders in a bitter battle which tightened up the National league pennant race. The (-.ants' lead over the St. Louis Cardinals is 2% games and over the Cubs 3 games. Long ridiculed for their inability to win on the road, the Cubs still hang on to pennant hopes. The Giants, cracking under the strain of se'ting the pace, have been riding the Cubs hard, trying to get the goats of young players unused to the pressure of a pennant race. Grimm's kids kept their mouths shut, played ba'l yesterday, and yanked th mselve.s right back into the pennant scramble. The Giants' lead could he chiseled to one game today. *Tf the Cubs beat the Giants the Cards could move within one game of the top by taking a double header from Brooklyn. Battling through the rain and mud. the Cubs subduer! the Giants in the 11th yesterday. Woody English, who has been warming the bench most of the season, cracked a line drive to left, scor-■ ing Demaree. who had walked. Lon Warneke was credited with his 14th victory although Charley Root pitched the 11th inning after Warneke was removed for a pinch-; hitter. Today's pitchers were expected to he Larry French, Cubs' i southpaw, and Clyde.'l Castleman. Tennessee rookie who leads the National league pi'chers with 11| victories and 3 defeats. Al Hollingsworth allowed only 3 hits as the Cincinnati Reds won

PURDUE STAR OUT OF GAME Duane Purvis Will Be I ni able To Play In AllStar (Janie Chicago, Aug. 23. <U.R) Duane Purvis of Purdue, who led the vote for ha’fbacks, will be unable ito play with the college all star football team against the Chicago Bears here August 29. ~ Coaches have wi hheld announce--1 inent about the star ball carrier 'but it was learned by the United , Press today thtv an old kn«e injury i will keep him on the bench, i Last fall Purvis and Jim Carter were known as "Purdues touch'down twins" and most of the 80.<>oo fans expected to attend the !aV star game had hoped to see them in action against the professionals. But while Purvis will not be in ; 'there. Carer undoubtedly will see , ucFoti throughout most of the I game. He has been used constantly in scrimmage and has display- i ' ed most of his old time form. I With Carter in the backfield i probably will be Stank Kostka at fullback. A' Nickelini of St. Mary's | at the other half, and Miller MumJas of Pittsburgh at quarter. Mumjas was elected captain of ■ the all stars yesterday and seems! .almost certain to start. He is finding plen'y of competition, how lever, from Cotton Garburton of Southern California. Jack Beymom of Illinois, and Salatino of Santa Clara. Salatino may g t the starting cal' if Mumjas is not selected. Kostka is the best fullbark on the squatj and appears to have that position clinched. Michelin! has won the favor of the coaches with his play, although Bill Shepherd ’ of Western Maryland and Pug Lund of Minnesota also have show- ! ed up well. So many great linemen are on t the squad that the coaches proh- 1 ably will not agree on the starting s forward wa'l until a day or so be- t fore the game.
