PETTIILO SETS SPEED RECORO AT SPEEDWAY Winner of 500-Mile Race Sets Record of Over 106 Miles Per Hour Indianapolis. May 31. — tU.P) Kelly Petillo, who learned his driving behind the wheel of a fruit truck In Los Angeles, today isn't worrying any more about where; Ms next spare automobile parts are corning from. He had $35,000 tn his pockets I and the prospect of a grea’ deal more before the next Indianapolis. aOo-niile speedway race rolls around. Kelly today was the king Os American drivers, winner of ihe 1835 classic. He won it with a car that his 32 rivals still insist was he ld toge her with piano wire, a hit of twine from the corner grocery. and a couple of rolls of adhesive tape. But he won it Just the same, and in 4 nours 28 minuses at the swiftest average <he ruce ever 5aw—106.264 miles per Spur. -Eight days ago you wouldn’t have bet a nickel against the $20,utm that he won or first priz •. $2.050 nr lap prizes and the rest or accessory prizes, because Kelly's automobile was spread all over one of the turns that cost Clay Weatherly. the 24-year-old Illinois driver, trts life in yesterday's race. Weatherly was the fourth casualty of his year's race, and the 11th in the last three years to die on the burning bricks. Many of Kelly’s rivals knew he had the fau'est job in the race, but neither they nor the record crowd of 175.000 ever expected it would last 500 miles. But Kelly hung off the pace for the first 240 miles, letting his arch-rival from California. Rex Mays, burn up the first half of the grind. Then when Mays went out with a broken spring shackle on the 9Sth lap Petillo. who had never been worse than fourtl

shot into the lead and held it Co the finish. Sixty miles from home, a sprinkling of rain wet the track, causing the officials to slow the field for 33 miles to 75 milee tin hour. The . shower did not lot up until Kelly ' was only 25 miles from home. Wilbur Shaw and Wild Bill Cum--1 mings, last year's winner, who j laid back and figured to make ' their great bid In the stretch, were |as completely stymied by the weather as Petillo was aided. As- , ter che rain, when he saw he could not overtake Petillo. Shaw concentrated on beating Cummings out for the SIO,OOO second prize. Even so, he finished only 35 seconds behind the winner, the better part of a lap back, while Cummings was a full five miles in Kelly's i wake. Os i‘he original 33 starters, only 13 were on the track at the finish. I Weatherly came to grief in the first 25 miles. Coming out of the northwest turn and heading into rhe mile-long straightaway in front of the huge grandstands, the car, a comber black Miller that cost the life of Johnny Hannon in the practice runs a week ago. got out of the 24-year-old driver's control, smacked the pro'ective wall and rocketed through the wooden fence into the infield in full view of tens of thousands of spectators. As the car crumbled in a heap. Weatherly and his mechanic. Edwin Bradburn of Los Angeles, were tossed clear. Weatherly was dead of a frac'ured skull anti Bradburn today lies in a hospital here, desperately injured. He suffered several fractured verterbrae in the middle section of his spine, but hope for his recovery was increased by the fact that he showed no signs of paralysis.
