ants of the original colony having migrated to other Islands. One of the most romantic chanters in history deals with the voyage ot the "Bounty”, the mutiny of the crew and their subsequent tale. The mutiny was provoked by the brutal treatment accorded the mon by the captain who was set adrift in a small boat with the few members of the crew who remained loyal. "Burn Ship Behind Them The mutineers set sail for the south seas and first landed on Tahiti. Their idyllic existence there, however, was troubled by fears of the long arm of British marine law Ten of the band, taking with them native wives, decided to leave civilization behind forever and hide themselves on some tiny distant island. Kate turned their ship to Pitcairn Island where they resolutely burned the "Bounty”, destroying all chance of ever returning home, and resigned themselves to their solitary existence. Those Who chose to remain at Tahiti were found by a British man-of-war and returned to England for trial. The captain and those who had remained loyal had managed to make the long voyage home in them tiny open boat across the huge ocean after indescribable hardships. Their testimony at the trial resulted in death sentences for most of the mutineers captured. Some few traces of the little band which settled on Pitcairn still remain. One historic marker is the tombstone which marks the grave of John Adams, the last survivor of the original colony.

Proper sanitary disposal of human excreta is the primary objective of the ERA community sanitation project that is now operating in Adams county; and it is through the construction of a new and approved type of sanitary toilet that this objective is to be realized. In support of this valuable project, the following excerpts from the U. S. treasury department bulletin, supplement No. 108, 1933, will no doubt be of interest and informative value to the citizens of Decatur and Adams county: Health Hazards of Insanitary Disposal of Excreta “Certain diseases, such as typhoid fever, hookworm, and the dysenteries, are transmitted by the body excretions of persons suffering from the disease, and by tlie carriers. Witli the exception of hookworm disease, the infectious agent is the living germ of the disease. A carrier is an apparently healthy person whose excreta contain the liviug germ of the disease. He may be a person who previously has had the disease, or one. who has never been known to have suffered from il. Other persons can become infected only by taking the live germ of the disease into the body or through the mouth, usually in contaminated water, milk, or other food. Thus, repulsive as the thought may be, any one who contracts typhoid fever or dysentary actually has taken into his mouth a minute quantity of the body excretion of another person. "Since, typhoid fever and Ihe dysenteries are transmitted by infected excreta, all of these diseases could be practically eradicated if all human excreta were so disposed ot that tho excreta of diseased persons and carriers

could not be taken into the mouth by other persons. Proper sanitary disposal of human excreta also would entirely eliminate hookworm disease. "The construction of any toilet, though simple, involves certain specific details that must be correct in couetruction in order that the toilet will afford protection it is designed to provide. In a community where a number of toilets are to be built, a great saving in cost of material and labor will . result to property owners if care is taken to employ labor trained in tho details of toilet construction. in accordance with the plan adopted." The matter of trained laborers is automatically taken care of by Hie sanitation project, for there are at present experienced workers employed hi this program, and their reliable services are free to the property owner who wishes to sanitate his premises. All that he needs to do is to secure the necessary materials, as specified by the authorized representative ot the project. Surely, this is a proposition W'lit is more than the average bargain and one that should not lie overlooked by any one who needs a sanitary toilet. —_ ——o — Legion And Moose Lodge Endorse Health Project The American Legion post 43 Decatur and Adams lodge No. 1311 of the. Adams’ county. It is proposed to replace the structure With a sanitary uni', approved and recommended by the state health authoi ities. Under usual conditions the cost of such an undertaking would be prohibitive to the average property owner. Rut now, thanks to the provisions, of the ERA which prefers free labor, the cost is minimized to that of material only. So many instances lumber and materials can be reclaimed from the ol<l structure tints further reducing the cost. Certainly the advantage of this pkm should appeal to every one that is desirous of sanitating his premises and thus contributing to the health of the community. We hope that every right thinking citizen will appreciate this situation and kend hks full cooperation so that the project will be 100% successful. K. E. DANIELS, Secy. City Board ot Health.
