The prisoner ran into the street ; shouting for a policeman, which at least makes a good news story. j Nuw Hauptmanns attorneys charge that the presence of Colonel Lindbergh in the i out room at the Flemington trial, influenced the jury, of course it did ami that's why he was there, but what's wrong with that? One reason the boys are going to have a tough time removing Franklin Delano Roosevelt from the presidency is that lie has away of bis own of endearing himself to the "newshawks” ami its about the most popular way so far discovered. ■ ■ Jim Flynn died of a heart attack in Los Angeles the other day. You perhaps don't remember him but he gained fame some years ago by knocking Jack Dempsey out in one; round. A year later Jack return- : cd the favor and kept on going while Jim slipped. Some morning, says the editor of Colliers, the Republicans, including Senator Hastings, will get up to tiud that in spite of the Democrats and all that lias been said about them, this country lias recovered and conditions arc about | as good as wo have any right to expect. And then (hey are going to be very, very angry. A great organization is the Conservation League and those in charge here demonstrated last night their sincerity. There is much work ahead along this line, and we are glad that Adams county has such a splendid bunch of 1 musters. C., hud something to do in causing President Roosevelt to , definitely decide to spend $200,000,ouo to bridge over and tunnel under * grade crossings. Fourteen children J were killed and many injured when , a B. Ac O. engine hit the bus in 1 which they were returning home on a rainy night. Any way such an improvement will be worth while. Attention of the highway officials is called to the fact that there are some dangerous spots where 527 passes the Decatur country club. Caution signs to automobile drivers at both the north and south of tltis section of road would help, i Cars come at fast speed and arc hidden by the elevations until they | burst into view a few feet away, j ; Golfers crossing from one side of j lie playing field to the other are jin grave danger. Application to I the district supervisor of the State i Highway Department would no doubt bring an C’der for "slow ; signs which would help out and perhaps save serious accidents. i A study by tlie state board of j amounts reveals the fact that while) services of state government in 1931 were increased to the public by approximately 30 per cent, the actual costs of those services were 11.6% lower under the second year of Governor Paul V. McNutt than they were in ill* 1 Republican year before lie took office. Total true expenditures by the stale administration for costs of government dwl not exceed $13,317,161.77, but the highway construction program boosted the total up to $33,398.y,16 43. This report was highly colored if ilsr opposition press re* j ports bv laving stress on highway expenditures which do not come out of tlie stale property tax levy, i To make the story even better for their purposes, the opposition included all the monies which thej state has assisted in administering for the Federal government in the form of relief and work projects. That made the better critical total !of some 80 million odd dollars which they headlined as the 1931 spending record of the state. How utterly they ignore the accounts board’s report that state government under Governor McNutt in 1934 cost $4,348,614.91 less than it did in 1932 under Governor Leslie. —o —■ 4 S T A R Si G N A L S1 bv OCT A VINE ♦- l-’ur persons who b‘-lievo that human destiny is guided by the planets the daily horoscope is outlined by a noted astrologer. the decline in thte debt wan gradual up to 1931, although from 1937 to 1931 the rat it ahowod a sharp increase. Altor 1931 the declixio was sharply acceloruled and tits figurcH show the debt lias been reduced 36.7 per cent in two yeurs. Several factors are given credit for tills sharp decrease. First, the economies practiced and preached by the adminislrution of Governor McNutt liuve struck pay dirt in the counties and townships; Second, tiio stale highway commission has taken over thousands of miles of road, relieving the local units from upkeep so that road money could bo used to pay bonds; Third, the tremendous increase in the moneys from gasoline tax and automobile license fees being sent back to the local units give these units sufficient money to take care of their roads so there is no longer need (or issuance of bonds; Fourtii, the bond moratorium of the 1932 and 1933 sessions of the legislature were causative factors and fifth, the depression, played a part for the simple reason the money was uot there. Mr. Cosgrove prediets that at the present rate of extinction of this debt. Indiana's gravel road bonds will have been paid in full by 194 n. thsreby eliminating an annual in-
