BERNE DEFEATS KIRKLAND FIVE IN FINAL GAME Boars Come From Behind In Second Half To Triumph. 35-25 Th’’ Berne Bears, defeated only on<e this season, won the annual Adams county tournament, downing the Kirkland Kangaroos in the final game Saturday night. 35 to 15. The tourney wu.i played Friday night and Saturday, at the Herne auditorium. Berne led nt the end of the first quarter. 8 to 4. but the Kangaroos rallied in the second period and ut the end of the half, held a 16-13 margin. The Bears came back strong after the rest period ami increased their lead to 35 to 19 with only three minutes of the game to play. Kirkland scored Six points in a last desperate rally but Berne's margin was too great. Berne advanced to the finals by defeating the Geneva Cardinal-; Saturday afternoon. 36 to 29, but only after Geneva gave the Bears a real scare. Berne took the lead early and Coach Erne inserted substitutes into the lineup. At the third quarter. Berne held only a 23-22 b-ad and the regulars went back in the game. With three minutes to go, Geneva led by three points but th- Bears came back with 1" points in the closing minutes. In the other semi-final game, j the Kirkland Kangaroos had little! difficulty defeating Monmouth, the team which surprised Friday night I with a victory over Jefferson j Kirkland held a 20-3 lead at the | half and coasted through to victory. INDIANA FIVE UPSETS IOWA Defeat of Hawkeyes Leaves Conference Race Wide Open — Chicago. Jan. 21. — (LLP) — lowa continued to lead the Big Ten basketball race today, hut the Hawkeyes had Purdue. Indiana, and Minnesota right on their heels. Each of the four leaders has lost one game, but lowa holds first place by virtue of having played five games. The Hawkeyes have won four games and lost one. Purdue and Indiana have played one less ; and are third for second place, with three victories and one defeat each. Minnesota, which has played only three games, holds fourth place, I with two victories and one loss. Three games are scheduled tonight. with Minnesota the only first division team in action. Minnesosta plays Wisconsin at Madison, and can tie Purdue and Indiama for second place by defeating the Badgers. In the other two games Northwestern plays Michigan at Ann Arbor and Chicago meets Ohio State at Columbus. Indiana's free scoring team handed lowa its first conference defeat Saturday night. 40-35, making the battle for the Big Ten title a wide open affair. Northwestern, after , losing its first three games, handed i Wisconsin's strong team a 36-31 defeat. In the other two games Illinois defeated Michigan, 34-22, and Minnesota won from Chicago, 42-33.
