His visit! last week thrilled the children and . another treat will be in store tor them if they return. On a mosquito extermination project in the New York Bronx, a survey showed 95 bosses and 91 common laborers on the job. Wonder how many mosquitos they found. The Christmas shopping spirit is at its height and those who get the job done this week will be able to enjoy the last few days before the holiday without harass or disappointment. Christmas shopping was brisk in Decatur over the week-end. One of the season’s largest crowds visited the stores and made purchases of gifts, or bought seasonable merchandise. Come again. Your donation to the Good Fellows club will bring happiness to some needy family and will encourage others to contribute. It's a most worthy cause and one of the avenues opened to you to enjoy the thrill of giving. Drop your contribution in one of the boxes. Decatur has five public parks and athletic fields, a civic accomplishment and appreciated by all. The cost has not been great in dollars and cents and by doing a little each year the facilities of the recreation centers are enhanced, adding to their usefulness. The program will be kept going. Chicago is considering a proposition to hold a 1935 world's fair on the grounds that housed the big exposition the past two years. It’s a treat for ! sore eyes to see such growth at ' our own front door. If you have > never seen four dozen houses goI I ing up at the same time you have ’ a treat coming by visiting the , homestead division. • Let's put the tramps and the "gimme a nickel for a cup of coffee" guys on the road. Saturday a half dozen of these panhandlers were seen about town. The writer happened to be in a local restaurant when one of them came in and got a cup of coffee. A few minutes later this same coffee drinker walked into this office and begged for another nickel for a cup. it's a habit with these fellows and they should be kept on the move. War clouds seem to be forming in Europe, following the dispute between Jugoslavia and Hungary, as an outgrowth of the assassination of King Alexander. France is siding with Jugoslavia and history may repeat itself, a shooting of one individual causing a war 1 that claims hundreds of thousands lof lives. It sounds foolish, but l humans are that way in periods of I excitement and it seems that the i war cry is the only way for them ; to give vent to pent up feelings. ——————— Frank G. Thompson, of Bluffton, representative from Adams and I Wells counties, is slated to be the i majority leader in the house during the session of the legislature. That would be fine. Mr. Thompson. a neighbor and friend of the people of this county, would be i mighty to see him elevated to this responsible position. He | lias the ability, leadership and experience to do the job. He is sincere in what he does and the Democrat party could not pick a more worthy man as pilot in mapping a legislative progrem. Our good friends, Hugh A. Barnhart and Pete Van Trump, publishers of the Rochester News-Sentinel, celebrated their tenth auuivrsary the other day. A 24-page edition was issued, a couple sections being devoted to historical data and a complete story of the paper's history. The founding of the Rochester paper dates back to 1850, a consolidation being made a decade ago and the anniversary marking the publication of the present daily under the same ownership. Across the state we wish to send our congratulations to the owners. It is gratifying to friends to learn that the Appellate court has awarded compensation to Mrs. Amos Fisher for the death of her I husband, drowned in the spray j pool at the city plant more than a I year ago. The'higher court revers- ' ed the decisions of the Indiana Industrial Board, on the appeal of local attorneys and awarded the . widow approximately five thousand dollars. Mr. Fisher was a faithful > public servant and his visit to the spray pond early on the morning of the tragedy was found to be in his line of duty, the court held. o Modern Etiquette By ROBERTA LEE J Q. TOW I E ! Do you know about the new variation of Contract Bridge? It's called TOWIE. No more post-mortems! Nobody to blame if you get "set" but yourself. May be played by front three to five players. Only three participate actively in the play. The declarer plays against all —including "inactive" players. No hand is played unless a game is bid. High penalties—high scores. Six cards exposed in "dummy'' before tre bidding starts. The new game may prove to be the successor to Contract Bridge, just as Contract succeeded Auction and Auction succeeded Whist. Our Washington Bureau has ready for you a new bulletin telling all about TOWIE and how It differs from CONTRACT. If you are a Bridge player, you will want to know about this new variation of Bridge play. Fill out the coupon below and send for the bulletin: CLIP COUPON HERE Dept. 315, Washington Bureau, DAILY DEMOCRAT, 1322 New York Avenue, Washington, D. C.
